Asia Past and Future
"A SIATRENDS [COVER, DEC. 15] is a timely platform for Asia-wide discussion of the 20 years past and the 20 hence. As you state, much good has come about through Asia's twin wheels of progress, industrialization and urbanization. Ills as well, pollution and the breakdown of traditional values. What next? The West is set to harness the information revolution, one that will bring forth many opportunities. In commerce, the change will be in the unclogging of the cholesterol that clutters the arteries of international trade. No more is there a need for a complicated and inefficient process between the manufacture of a product and its consumption. The benevolent vultures of cyberspace will disintermediate. It will start off at the wholesale level. Remember, the largest market in the world, that for wholesale U.S. dollars of some $3 trillion a day, has been done over cyberspace for the last 10 years. Internet and add-on technologies enable this to be expanded to most other products and services.

Revaluation of yuan against US dollar a right move: MM Lee
By S Ramesh, Channel NewsAsia SINGAPORE: Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew says China's decision to revalue the yuan against the US dollar is a right move to make though it's only a two per cent appreciation. The move is also good for China because if the value of the yuan doesn't go up, Mr Lee says, China will have big liquidity problems. Mr Lee made these points in an interview with the Japanese daily Yomiuri Shimbun.

Taiwanese won't need visas to visit during Aichi expo

TAIPEI (Kyodo) Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi told the Taiwanese representative at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit over the weekend that Japan will waive visas for tourists from Taiwan during the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi, the Central News Agency reported Monday. The Taiwanese representative, Lee Yuan-tseh, who won the 1986 Nobel Prize in chemistry, said he had conversations on the matter with Koizumi on the sidelines of the Santiago summit, the Taiwanese news agency reported. "Japan has agreed to grant visa-free privileges to visitors from Taiwan," Koizumi was quoted as telling Lee Sunday. Koizumi was also quoted as saying Taiwan and Japan should boost cultural and technological exchanges, the news agency said. In late September, Koizumi told Cabinet ministers to consider a visa waiver for tourists from Taiwan to attract more foreign visitors to the Aichi Expo, which will be held near Nagoya from March 25 to Sept. 25. Japan seizes boat FUKUOKA (Kyodo) A Fisheries Agency patrol ship apprehended a Taiwanese boat after finding it fishing without authorization Monday in Japan's exclusive economic zone off Nagasaki, agency officials said Tuesday.

Yuan Tseh Lee Born: Major discipline: Physical Chemistry Died: Minor discipline:
In 1986 Yuan Tseh Lee received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to the understanding of the rates of chemical reactions on a molecular level. He developed instrumentation that set the standard for studies using lasers and focused beams of molecules, which he subsequently used to carry out ground-breaking experiments on simple chemical reactions. This led to a breakthrough in chemists' understanding of the dynamics of chemical processes. Lee shared the prize with Dudley R. Herschbach and John C. Polanyi, who also made significant contributions to this area of basic chemical research. Yuan Lee was born on November 29, 1936 in Hsinchu, Taiwan. His mother was a school teacher and his father an accomplished artist. His elementary education was disrupted by events during World War II. At a young age he was inspired to become a scientist after reading a biography of Marie Curie. Because of his excellent academic record in high school, he was accepted into the National Taiwan University in 1955 without the usual entrance examination. During his first year there he decided to major in chemistry, and he received a bachelor's degree in 1959. Two years later, he earned an M.S. degree at the National Tsinghua University.
