Crossed Molecular Beam Study of O( l D) + SiH
Multiple Reaction Channels with Different Dynamics
(IAMS and NTU) Jim J. Lin, Yuan T. Lee and Xueming Yang,
Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC
Department of Chemistry, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC
The titled reaction has been studied using a newly built crossed molecular beam apparatus with a universal detector. Angular resolved time-of-flight spectra have been measured for OH, SiO, HSiO (or SiOH), H SiO (or HSiOH), and H SiO (or H SiOH) products. Four distinctive channels have been identified through the analysis of the experimental data: O( l D) + SiH O( l D) + SiH SiO O( l D) + SiH + H SiO O( l D) + SiH + SiO In the OH + SiH channel, the angular distribution of the OH products peaks sharply at forward direction with respect to the O( l D) beam, indicating a direct reaction mechanism i.e. the lifetime of the intermediate is shorter than the rotational period. In the H + H SiO channel, minor amount of H SiO products has been observed with backward angular distribution, which also suggests a direct reaction mechanism. The kinetic energy release of the H + H

Nobel laureate returns home to stir up a sleepy institution
By Jullan Baum
FAR Eastern Economic Review 84.04.06 Lee Yuan-tseh and his wife sacrificed a comfortable life in their luxury home outside San Francisco, California, a year ago. At the invitation of President Lee Teng-hui,they returned to Taipei's densely populated suburbs to rejoin the society they had left behind three decades earlier. There the president appointed Lee head of Academia Sinica, Taiwan's most prestigious reasearch institution. "Peopel always asked when they visited me at Berkeley why I agreed to come back to Taiwan, "Lee says, He did trade a big house with an acre of land nestled in the mountains, a graden and swimming pool for a smaller home in a polluted, crowded city. "I told them that if you're thinking about helping other people, it makes you feel good to come back." In 1963, Lee went aborad to study with his new wife, Wu Jin-li. "In the 1960s, most young people didn't feel there were good opportunities in Taiwan," he explains about his decision to leave. "If you didn't have good connectins, you couldn't get an education or a decent job. The best and brightest went to America." He settled down at the University of California, where he became a teacher and researcher, and eventually a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences. In 1986, he won the Nobel Prize for chemistary along with two other researchers for their work in understanding elementary chemical reactions. Lee became the only Taiwanese to win such an honour.

Dr. Yuan T. Lee, Senior Advisor to the President of Taiwan, to Speak at Ohio State University
Dr. Yuan T. Lee, recipient of the 1986 Nobel Prize for Chemistry and a senior advisor to the president of Taiwan, will speak at the Ohio Union West Ballroom on Monday, November 4, 2002 at 3:00 PM.
In his role as presidential advisor, Dr. Lee is credited with revamping the educational system and advancing the economic development of Taiwan. In the scientific field, Dr. Lee's research has revealed much of what we know of the workings of chemical reactions. His interests include the impact of science and technology on human society in the areas of global, political and economic issues.
Dr. Lee's speech, Chemical Dynamics, Combustion, and the Future of Mankind, is part of the University Research Lectures Series sponsored by the Office of Research at The Ohio State University. Dr. Lee will discuss the potential for practical applications of science and technology for the benefit of mankind in such areas as global climate change and the economic development of nations.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
3 December 2003
Nobel Laureate Yuan T. Lee Calls for Global Scientific Response to Global Problems
"As the world becomes smaller and smaller, the challenges faced by each country to combat its deteriorating living environment have become global problems," says Nobel Laureate Yuan T. Lee. As a result, 'these challenges are now challenges for all humankind." Lee made his remarks at the IAP General Assembly and Conference on Science and Society held in Mexico City 1-5 December 2003. Each developing country, Lee notes, "has been attempting to follow closely in the footsteps of the so-called developed countries and is adopting patterns of growth that require excessive or often wasteful consumption of natural resources." It is a trend, he warns, that simply cannot be sustained. Lee observes, for example, that the world's crude oil reserves will likely be depleted in 40 to 60 years and that natural gas reserves will likely be exhausted in 80 to 100 years. He adds, however, that "production will probably peak much earlier, perhaps within the next 20 to 40 years. This means that before we are halfway through this century, the gap between energy demand and supply will have greatly widened, and the energy crisis will be here to stay."

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Yuan T. Lee The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1986 Yuan Tseh Lee was born on November 19, 1936 in Hsinchu, Taiwan. His father is an accomplished artist and his mother a school teacher. He started his early education while Taiwan was under Japanese occupation. His elementary education was disrupted soon after it started during World War II. It was not until after the war when Taiwan was returned to China that he was able to attend school normally as a third year student in grade school. By the end of his freshman year he had decided chemistry was to be chosen for his field. He worked under Professor Hua-sheng Cheng on his B. S. thesis which was on the separation of Sr and Ba using the paper electrophoresis method. After graduation in 1959, he went on to the National Tsinghua University to do his graduate work. He received his Master's degree on the studies of the natural radioisotopes contained in Hukutolite, a mineral of hot spring sediment under Professor H. Hamaguchi's guidance. After receiving his M. S. he stayed on at Tsinghua University as a research assistant of Professor C. H. Wong and carried out x-ray structure determination of tricyclopentadienyl samarium. Among some of the recognitions he has received include the Harrison Howe Award, Rochester Section, American Chemical Society, Peter Debye Award of Physical Chemistry and the Nobel Prize in 1986 together with Dudley Herschback and John C. Polanyi "for their contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes".

STAFF REPORTER IN SANTIAGO , CHILE
Saturday, Nov 20, 2004,Page 1 The recent string of goodwill gestures extended by President Chen Shui-bian ( ) will be the main message his special envoy to APEC conveys to Chen's Chinese counterpart in the upcoming APEC leaders' summit. "When I see Chinese President Hu Jintao (JÀAÀÜ), I'll tell him that President Chen has expressed goodwill gestures in various occasions and that his resolve to pursue peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is strong," Lee Yuan-tseh (§õ»·õ), the president of Academia Sinica, told a press conference held upon his arrival. "I don't have any new messages for President Hu, except for those mentioned in President Chen's inauguration speech, the National Day address and the Nov. 11 speech." During Chen's inauguration speech, he pledged to honor the "five noes" promised in his 2000 inauguration speech. He also urged both sides to establish a dynamic "peace and stability framework" for interactions.
