LEON M. LEDERMAN
Coping with the Consequences of our Own Ingenuity
The scientific revolution in the 20th century entered a new phase; it became universal, the unique world culture, laced with optimism, adventure and passion. The associated technologies - advancing hand-in-hand - can make us comfortable, immortal, enabling access to a vast ocean of knowledge and bringing us, in our living room and at the squeak of a mouse, all the works of literature (soon in any language); also all of the art, music, philosophy, all the summaries and analyses of history, the values weighed and accumulated in every epoch, in every place on the globe. The paradox lies in the indifference of our populations to so much of this. A part of the blame stems from the inequities in the distribution of these comforts and capabilities. But even in the populations of industrial nations, the glories of humanity's achievements are drowned in a sea of trivialities, of mindless and passive entertainment. We are inundated by a tide of unsustainable consumerism. The wonders of nature revealed pass us by. Thus we lose the value of the heritage of older experiences, we lose the exposure to the spiritual beauty of nature, but we also lose the personal empowerment that comes from scientific thinking. That ignorance and hostility towards the use of intellect and reason, and this is the most chilling of all paradox, is vested in our leadership at a time in our history when need for marshalling vast thinking skills is most required. This is the best yet evidence of the failure of education.

ADDRESS TO THE PARTICIPANTS AT THE LOCARNO CONGRESS
April 30, 1997
Although the end of the millennium is a symbolic episode, it coincides with dynamic changes in society, changes in the way people live, the way organizations work. These changes are generated by technology and, most significantly, by information storage, retrieval and communications. As we prepare to celebrate the 21st century, we note how our lives have been influenced by the advance of science in the 20th. We have progressed from early death by infectious diseases to late death by cancer, heart attack and stroke. We notice that the role of national governments is giving way in economic activity to multinational businesses and their markets. We are also progressing towards a more crowded, warmer, more connected planet. Environmental change, population growth and the development of nations are major problems which will have a decisive influence on life in the 21st century. The function of Universities : to acquire new knowledge and to disseminate this through teaching has always had an overarching goal - to produce graduates who can cope with the world into which they emerge. In view of the awesome implications of the changes we have sketched, it is time to rethink the traditional way Universities have operated. There is now, more than ever, a basic conflict between the training of research specialists who must advance the various scientific and technological disciplines and the need for generalists who can operate in real world problems which recognize no disciplinary borders.

The Lederman Science Center, named for Nobel Laureate and former Fermilab Director, Leon M. Lederman, is located at Fermilab about 35 miles west of Chicago. Visit the Lederman Science Center to gain hands-on experience exploring how Fermilab physicists understand nature's secrets. The Center can accommodate groups of five or less on a walk-in basis. Larger groups must book a visit.
Two sites are available for self-guided tours at Fermilab. First, guests are welcome to visit the "Quarks to Quasars" exhibits at the Leon M. Lederman Science Education Center just west of Wilson Hall on Pine Street. Here you'll gain hands-on experience as you experiment with various exhibits. Walk-in visitors can use the Visitor's Guide to explore more than 30 experiments. Second, the Margaret Pearson Interpretive Trail is a quarter mile self-guiding nature trail through a portion of Fermilab's restored prairie. It is located on the north side of the Pine Street exit of the site.
A two-hour guided tour for groups of 10 to 40 is available by appointment.

Nobel Laureate in science Leon M. Lederman to speak at Vanderbilt
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Nobel Laureate Leon M. Lederman, whose research career has spanned four decades and includes many remarkable achievements, will deliver the Department of Physics and Astronomy's annual Francis G. Slack Lecture in Physics Monday, April 8.
Lederman, the Pritzker Professor of Science at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, will deliver a lecture titled "The Inner Space Outer Space Connection" Monday, April 8, at 4 p.m. in 4309 Stevenson Center. The public is invited to attend.
Lederman graduated from the City College of New York in 1943 and entered the U.S. Army. In 1951 he received his Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University. He spent the next 28 years at Columbia directing the Nevis Laboratory and conducting research at Nevis, Brookhaven National Labs, (Long Island, N.Y.), CERN (Geneva, Switzerland), Lawrence Berkeley Lab (California), Princeton, Rutherford Lab (England) and Fermilab (Chicago). He became director of Fermilab in 1979.
Lederman's research career includes many landmark achievements. In 1956, his Columbia University team discovered the neutral K-meson particle. In 1961, Lederman and others discovered the muon neutrino, which provided the first proof that there is more than one type of neutrino, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1988.

featuring Dr. Leon M. Lederman Date: October 17, 2000 Time: 7:30 PM Location: IMSA Auditorium "Science and Anti-Science: Technology and Its Burdens" Ignorance of science thinking and of the complexities of an increasingly technological society are the consequence of a failed educational system. Here, education is broadly defined to involve home, school, media, science centers, books and magazines. This lecture reviewed the status of science on a very broad level and discuss such anti-science movements as astrology, UFO sightings, alternative medicines, post-modernism, etc. Lederman wanted to connect science to technology and discuss the inevitable two-sidedness of technology: its' economic, social and cultural virtues and its' negative impacts. His argument is that, where the dark sides of technology can be recognized, informed popular opinion makes the choice. Inquiry about this page?
