THE AMERICAN RED CROSS

A History of Helping Others
Since 1881, people have turned to the American Red Cross for emergency services. Today, 1.2 million trained and dedicated American Red Cross volunteers, young and old, are helping their neighbors across the country every day.
Although it is not a government agency, the American Red Cross is chartered by Congress to provide special services to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and to disaster victims. American Red Cross workers assist our men and women in Armed Forces and their families in emergencies. They are at the scene of more than 66,000 disasters a year, from house fires to devastating flood and tornadoes. They also teach their neighbors lifesaving skills in Red Cross CPR, First Aid, water safety, and health courses. They collect about 6 million units of blood yearly in local blood drives. They work with sister Red Cross societies around the world to help victims of natural and man-made calamities.
The Red Cross Movement Is Founded to Protect Victims of War The American Red Cross is part of an international humanitarian movement that has its roots in 19th century war-torn Europe.

Joining the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
Was your first job with the International Committee of the Red Cross? No, I worked as an obstetrician/gynecologist for six years. I got my training. But human rights, international work was in your blood, as we've just discussed. It turned out to be that way, but I was headed for a career in obstetrics and gynecology. I was named director of a hospital in Switzerland and finally decided not to take that job, because the ICRC, the International Committee of the Red Cross, asked me to stay on with them. What were your first assignments? Did you start doing work with prisoners or did you have a different portfolio in the beginning in the Red Cross? Before we talk about that, let's help people understand what exactly the International Committee of the Red Cross is, and what its mandate is. For a U.S. audience, of course, we mostly think of the Red Cross as a national organization dealing with disasters, but that's not really the main mandate of your committee, or is it? And what this is really about is peoples and private organizations in different parts of the world concerned about the norms that we are going to live by as states deal with each other. This movement was an engine for new norms on these issues in international affairs, right?

http://peedee.redcross.org/chapter 1.htm
The American Red Cross is part of an international humanitarian movement that has its roots in 19th century war-torn Europe.
In 1862, Henry Dunant , a young Swiss businessman, wrote A Memory of Solferino , in which he described what he had seen on the northern Italian battlefield in 1859 where 40,000 troops were killed or wounded and left without help. His concern touched many, leading to the birth in 1863 of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). This first committee, which included Dunant, adopted a red cross on a white background as the emblem, the reverse of the Swiss flag.
Dunant's ideas led to the Geneva Conventions, international treaties designed to protect these war victims: the wounded and sick on land (1864) and sea (1906), prisoners of war (1929), and civilians (1949). Since then, 165 governments have signed the Geneva Conventions, including additional revisions to protect victims of all armed conflict. Today, the all-Swiss ICRC continues its protective role around the world.
The American Red Cross is one of more than 145 national societies that make up the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. (Governments recognized the crescent as a protective emblem in 1929.) In addition, the American Red Cross works closely with the nonmember Magen David Adom society of Israel. The League encourages its member societies to work together to relieve suffering from major natural disasters.

THE BAHAMAS RED CROSS SOCIETY
The Bahamas branch of the International Red Cross began its work in 1939 under the auspices of the British Red Cross. The Original purpose was to serve the relief needs of Allied troops in the vicinity and particularly those stationed in The Bahamas. In 1945, as World War II ended, priorities shifted from treating wounded soldiers and sailors to treating and controlling disease and malnutrition. The Red Cross fell naturally into service in these areas and established a number of services to aid and care for children, the Center for Deaf Children among them. The Branch also provided service to the Discharged prisoners Committee, the Child Protection Committee and the Boys Industrial School Visiting Committee. It was during this period that the Branch began to attract and actively enlist the voluntary services of public-spirited philanthropic citizens and residents. Early supporters of the organization’s work included Dr. Jackson Burnside and Dr. Cleveland Eneas, both of whom supplied dental services to the Schools Medical Service, which the Red Cross provided. Other medical services were provided by Dr. G. Worrell and Dr. C. Gordon.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was born in 1859 and had as its goal the establishment of national societies in as many nations as possible, all having the common mission of alleviating suffering in times of conflict. There were 145 national Red Cross Societies around the world today, all of which belonged to the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies based in Geneva, Switzerland. (13 3005, 3006) Since 1976, the Canadian Red Cross Society had received monthly copies of the bulletin published by the ICRC. Specifically, the Canadian Red Cross Society received Bulletin No. 25, published by the ICRC in February of 1978. The bulletins were kept in the headquarters library and copies were also distributed to a mailing list. The library was open at all times to members of the public. (13-3006, 3007) Bulletin No. 25 made clear that the ICRC did not compile the statistics being attributed to it in Did Six Million Really Die?. (13-3007) On cross-examination, de Grace testified that a person coming to the Canadian Red Cross headquarters would have been met in the entrance by a receptionist. To obtain access to the library, the person would first have to ask whether there was a library, then would have to be directed to it by the receptionist. There was no public advertising of the library. It was a small library, reserved for Red Cross people, volunteer staff and the public that was inquiring about certain areas of Red Cross activity. (13-3008)

In this state of emergency, PRCS played a commendable role in helping the Pakistan government to organise proper refugee camps with adequate facilities of food, safe drinking water, housing, medicine and means of livelihood for the incoming refugees. In the health sector the PRCS has left an undeletable mark. From the days of its vigorous campaigns against tuberculosis that motivated the youth and the children to buy PRCS charity stamps to its evergreen blood donation drives, PRCS is seen as an effective player in the community health sector of Pakistan. An innovator and a leader in transfusion medicine and research, the PRCS has provided generations of Pakistanis with blood products that are safe and reliable.

The basis for all of OTC's services stems from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement's mission to relieve human suffering and promote world peace. The organization consists of three main components, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and over 175 Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies. Though each plays a different role, they unite under the common goal of promoting worldwide humanitarian assistance to victims of manmade and natural disasters. Birth of a Movement
The Red Cross Movement was founded by Swiss businessman Henry Dunant in 1863. After witnessing a bloody battle in Solferino, Italy, Dunant wrote A Memory of Solferino, which described the plight of victims of war. In it he proposed the establishment of a civilian volunteer relief corps to care for wounded soldiers. Dunant's efforts lead to the calling of an international conference to implement these recommendations. Thus, ICRC was born. To define its unity, ICRC adopted the symbol of the red cross on a white field (the reverse of the Swiss flag) to designate activities and services provided by the International Red Cross Movement. To this day, the ICRC is a private institution headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

"We commend Senators Peter Fitzgerald and Hillary Rodham Clinton for urging the expeditious inclusion of Israel’s Magen David Adom Society into the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "Israel’s emergency relief agency provides international humanitarian aid to people in many countries, regardless of nationality or religious affiliation, and should be included." The Magen David Adom Society was established in 1930 to provide medical and first aid services to the Jewish community in Palestine. Since then, it has provided wide medical and humanitarian services for all residents and visitors to the State of Israel as well as to victims of humanitarian crises such as in Kosovo and the recent earthquakes in Greece, Turkey and India.
