History
The International Federation was founded in 1919 in Paris in the aftermath of World War I. The war had shown a need for close cooperation between Red Cross Societies, which, through their humanitarian activities on behalf of prisoners of war and combatants, had attracted millions of volunteers and built a large body of expertise. A devastated Europe could not afford to lose such a resource.
It was Henry Davison, president of the American Red Cross War Committee, who proposed forming a federation of these National Societies. An international medical conference initiated by Davison resulted in the birth of the League of Red Cross Societies, which was renamed in October 1983 to the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and then in November 1991 to become the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The first objective of the Federation was to improve the health of people in countries that had suffered greatly during the four years of war. Its goals were "to strengthen and unite, for health activities, already-existing Red Cross Societies and to promote the creation of new Societies"

In 1922, just after World War I, there was a general yearning for peace. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia - then one State, Czechoslovakia - the National Society proclaimed a three-day truce at Easter to promote peace. An eminent government leader of the time summed up the underlying aspirations of that initiative as follows: "Our Red Cross wants to prevent disease so that it will not be obliged to give care; it also wants to encourage our society to prevent wars rather than having to bear the serious consequences involved. We all know the importance of the moral potential it brings into being and extends to all sections of the community. If its annual action could take hold in the whole world, this would certainly be a major contribution to peace". This was an intimation of what was to become World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
This initiative, known as the "Red Cross Truce", had a big impact on the public, but met with some scepticism among National Society leaders. As a result the 14th International Conference of the Red Cross set up an International Commission to study the Red Cross Truce. Its report, presented to the 15th International Conference in Tokyo in 1934, stated that it approved the principle of the Truce and considered it advisable that its application be made more general, from the point of view of methodology, taking into account the psychology characteristic of different regions.

The American Red Cross
A History of Helping Others

S ince 1881, people have turned to the American Red Cross for emergency services. Today, 1.2 million trained and dedicated American Red Cross volunteers, young and old, are helping their neighbors across the country every day. Although it is not a government agency, the American Red Cross is chartered by Congress to provide special services to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and to disaster victims. American Red Cross workers assist our men and women in the Armed Forces and their families in emergencies. They are at the scene of more than 40,000 disasters a year, from house fires to devastating floods and tornadoes. They also teach their neighbors lifesaving skills in Red Cross CPR, first aid, water safety, and health courses. They collect about 6 million units of blood yearly in local blood drives. They work with sister Red Cross societies around the world to help victims of natural and man-made calamities.

No matter how strong the family ties, moves and separations often put strain on relationships. The Red Cross can help with immediate personal and family problems. Red Cross acts as a liaison between the serviceperson, no matter where they're stationed, and their family back home. A Red Cross presence is maintained at U.S. military bases around the world. Families back home simply have to contact the nearest Red Cross chapter for assistance. In the event of an emergency, critical accident, illness, or death in a serviceperson's immediate family, the Red Cross should be called at once. The Red Cross is equipped to verify the situation and relay an emergency leave request to proper military authorities. It is then up the commanding officer to decide whether or not to grant leave. Regular communication between servicepersons and their families is ordinarily no problem, but sometimes, a long time with no word can become worrisome. The Red Cross can help. Through our worldwide communications network, we can communicate with the installation or ship where the serviceperson is stationed. You'll get a report on his or her welfare to give you peace of mind. Also, servicepersons can request the same service related to families back home.

Geneva -Amman , 24 March 2003 The International Federation signs agreement with the Arab League Humanitarian crises in Iraq and the Middle East were very much to the fore at today's signing in Cairo of an historic agreement on humanitarian assistance between the Arab League and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The Federation’s Secretary General, Didier Cherpitel, emphasised the critical role that the Federation's member Red Crescent societies notably the Palestinian and Iraqi Red Crescent societies play in responding to humanitarian emergencies and bringing aid to the most vulnerable. "Thanks to the good preparedness work of the Red Crescent in Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Syria and Turkey, we have been able to launch an appeal for 111 million Swiss francs to assist as many as 305,000 people in the event of any major refugee crisis resulting from the present conflict. The Federation also continues to mobilise support for the emergency work of the Palestine Red Crescent Society on behalf of a population weakened by conflict, poverty and malnutrition," Cherpitel said.

International Day of the Red Cross and Red Crescent
The International Day of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, falls each year on May 8 th , the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant , the Swiss citizen who in 1863 founded the Red Cross, which later became the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). It was June 1859 when the armies of Austria and the Franco-Sardinian alliance fought a daylong battle near the northern Italian village of Solferino. The casualties were heavy; some 40,000 dead and wounded soldiers lay scattered across the battlefield. That same evening Henry Dunant, a young Swiss businessman, arrived in the area on business. He was horrified by what he saw. With the help of the women in nearby villages, Dunant tried to aid the wounded regardless of their uniform and nationality - seeing them as unarmed and suffering men in need of help. In 1863, Dunant and four citizens of Geneva called for the humane treatment of the sick and wounded during wartime. This was the precursor to the modern Geneva Conventions. This meeting marked the founding of the Committee for Relief to the Wounded, which later became the International Committee of the Red Cross. The symbol of the Red Cross (the reverse of the Swiss flag) was recognized by states in 1864 as a protective sign for ambulances, hospitals and military medical services. The Red Crescent appeared for the first time in 1876 on the ambulances of the Ottoman Empire. In 1929, it was recognized and became a protective sign.

However, there is never the red border around it. On the headquarters of the organization here in Zagreb the two more usual flags (Red Cross flag and Red Crescent flag) are hoisted permanently.

A Brief History of the Red Cross
In 1859, Swiss businessman Henri Dunant (1828-1910) visited the northern Italian battlefield of Solferino and was deeply affected by the impact of war on the lives and dignity of both combatant and civilian. The memoir he wrote, A Memory of Solferino , inspired the 1863 founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Near the end of his book Dunant writes: "But why have I told of all these scenes of pain and distress, and perhaps aroused painful emotions in my readers? Why have I lingered with seeming complacency over lamentable pictures, tracing their details with what may appear desperate fidelity? It is a natural question. Perhaps I might answer it by another: Would it not be possible, in time of peace and quiet, to form relief societies for the purpose of having care given to the wounded in wartime by zealous, devoted and thoroughly qualified volunteers?" The aim of Dunant's proposals was twofold: on the one hand, to create in all countries voluntary "relief societies for the purpose of having care given to the wounded in wartime " and, on the other, to formulate an "international principle, sanctioned by a Convention inviolate in character, " which would serve as the basis and support for the relief societies. In 1864, representatives from 11 countries adopted ten articles for the purpose of "mitigating the evils inseparable from war..." and recommended "that there exist in every country a committee whose mission consists in cooperating in times of war with the hospital service of the armies by all means in its power."

ACTIVISM
The Red Cross
The Red Cross says it is not involved with abortion. But in a number of cases, Red Cross societies have been involved as partners in programs that involve contraception.

In one of the most recent examples, a Red Cross chapter in Salt Lake City was a partner in , a program which distributed 250,000 " safe sex kits " during the Olympic Winter Games. Each kit contained two condoms. Witnesses reported that despite assurances, the condoms were given to minors. The Red Cross subsequently withdrew from the program , but only after the bulk of the distribution was complete.
Adolescent programs
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is listed on a United Nations Population Fund roster of organizations involved in the effort to support "adolescent reproductive and sexual health." Among the other "partners" are the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the Margaret Sanger Center International (an outreach of Planned Parenthood of New York City, which was guided for many years by Sanger's grandson). Who's paying for all this? The UNFPA lists two major benefactors: the
