Purpose Donations Resources Volunteer ... Links Historical The Daniel Boone Chapter of the American Red Cross has a long history of helping people in Berea, Madison County, and the surrounding counties of Garrard, Jackson, Lee, Lincoln, Owsley, and Rockcastle. It was chartered on July 16, 1917 and Rechartered on October 27th, 2001. Here are just a few recent testimonials about how the Daniel Boone Chapter has helped people in various ways. "I served as ETO in WWII and the Red Cross was there to help us. Now that I'm a veteran they are still here to help me with my VA paperwork to get my benefits. I don't know what I would do without them."
-Mr. Barnes, Madison Co., Armed Forces Emergency Assistance client. "You have a great chapter and helped a lot when my house burned and I lost everything. You helped me get my medicine and glasses replaced as well as clothing and groceries. Keep up the great work. Thank you so much!"
-Ms. Griffin, Lincoln Co., Disaster Services client. "I cannot express how grateful my family and I are for the Daniel Boone Red Cross. We lost our home to fire on 8-28-01. There are four people in my family and the only clothes we had were the ones we were wearing. The chapter gave us vouchers to buy clothing, shoes and household items. If there is any fundraising organization that deserves donations, it is the Red Cross. No one knows when a disaster may strike. Thank you so much!"

42. Brother, Can You Spare A Billion? The Story Of Jesse H. Jones: Jesse Jones
In that capacity, he and other leaders created the league of red cross societies, making the agency the international relief organization it is today.
http://www.pbs.org/jessejones/jesse_ww1_2.htm
From these bureaus, Jesse Jones quickly set up medical aid for the troops in Europe. In the span of a few months, 95 hospitals were built, serving a wide variety of casualties. The Red Cross rapidly recruited physicians and nurses to staff the hospitals for troops at home and abroad. Jones created a motor corps whose sole responsibility was to safely transport sick and wounded soldiers from ships and trains to hospitals and homes. In addition, he created a network of canteen and relief centers that provided much-needed clothing and personal care items to military personnel.
Under the Red Cross Bureau of Construction, he built convalescent homes, recreation centers and warehouses all for the use of military service people fighting in World War I. Costing millions of dollars, many of the building concepts for these structures were drawn out by Jones himself. Overall, Jones' efforts contributed to the mental, moral and physical well-being of the American servicemen. When the war ended, the American Red Cross had established itself as a powerful relief agency that successfully assisted those in need.
But Jones' service for the organization did not stop with the signing of the armistice. In 1918, he was appointed to the Red Cross War Council. In this role, he once again put his remarkable organizational skills to work assisting with the demobilization effort in Europe. In 1919, Jones served as an American delegate at the Red Cross conferences in France and Switzerland. In that capacity, he and other leaders created the League of Red Cross Societies, making the agency the international relief organization it is today. Bascom N. Timmons, author of

'Beyond Conflict'
The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies 1919 - 1994
A.B. The International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies connects, co-ordinates, supports and promotes the National member societies' actions not only in wartime, but 'beyond conflict', i.e. in times of peace. It is an important instrument for humanitarian work in today's world; its support is essential to keep the many National societies together who are each faced with extremely disparate political, human and humanitarian demands in their countries. The rather complex history of the Federation and its predecessor, the League of Red Cross Societies, between the two World Wars is largely unknown to the present generation. In Beyond Conflict (1997), the Federation has provided such an honest and worthy account of its own history that one can warmly recommend this book to every interested reader. It is regrettable that it has not yet been translated into all the main world languages.
Founded in 1919 by only five member Societies, although already during World War I more volunteers had been active in the Red Cross movement than there had been combatants in the war, the Federation today has a membership of 171 national Societies, over 122 million volunteers and about 284,000 employees. The aftermath of World War I with severe famine, the typhoid epidemic in Eastern Europe and the earthquake in Japan in 1923, which killed 200,000 people, intensified the determination to have a humanitarian structure at hand in peace-time, too.

“Always there... touching more lives, in new ways... under the same trusted symbol." The history of the Greater Houston Area Chapter of the American Red Cross parallels the calamities and disasters that have befallen the area. Hurricanes, floods, explosions, fires, and the effects of war on local residents are backdrops to this 86- year story. Jesse Jones
Jesse H. Jones, elected chairman of the War Fund Drive in 1917, was presented with a fund raising goal of $150,000 but went on to collect $250,000. The remarkable accomplishment stood out because the price of cotton had dropped dramatically that year, causing financial distress throughout the South. Mr. Jones went on to become director of military relief for the American Red Cross in Washington. He was appointed to the Red Cross War Council and became a delegate to the European conferences which formed the League of Red Cross Societies. He later became U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Houston Endowment Inc., the charitable trust established by Jesse H. Jones and his wife, Mary Gibbs Jones has supplied grants to meet the disaster and building needs of the Houston Chapter and to support the growth and service Jesse Jones envisioned.
February 5- Houston Chapter of the American Red Cross forms. Houston's population at the time was 12,000.

DANIEL McCABE in which over 13,000 Canadians became infected with HIV or hepatitis C as a result of the blood they received from transfusions has badly battered the once-pristine reputation of the Canadian Red Cross. In the wake of the scandal, the organization is being stripped of its role as the country's official blood agency which means it will lose more than half its funding as well as its principal mission. It faces large debts, a public loss of confidence and at least 20 lawsuits, including a $3.5 billion class action suit filed by those infected with hepatitis C. McGill law professor Armand de Mestral is the newly elected vice-president of the Canadian Red Cross and he will be a principal player as the 100-year-old organization fights to stay alive. "Words can't express our great sorrow over being a part of this immense tragedy," says de Mestral. Still, he says it's unfair to make the Red Cross the whipping boy for all that went wrong. "All the decisions that were made were made in collaboration with the government and frequently under the direction of the government." De Mestral has been involved with the organization for four years first as a counsel, then as a member of its board of governors. As vice-president, his chief duty will be to oversee the organization's international activities (Canadian Red Cross volunteers are active in Africa, Afghanistan and Bosnia) and its relationship with the International Red Cross and the League of Red Cross Societies. He will also remain on the board as it charts a new path.

"National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies." "The American Red Cross." Anyone doing a keyword search on the "Red Cross" could easily become confused by all the terms it generates. What do they all mean? What distinguishes them from one another? The International Red Cross Movement This is an umbrella term which refers to all the organizations, national and international, allowed to use the Red Cross emblem (the Red Crescent emblem in Moslem countries) and all the activities they undertake to relieve human suffering throughout the world, whether it be in war time, in response to natural or man-made disasters, or in order to prevent disasters from occurring. The Movement is meant to transcend all political, racial, and religious boundaries and to maintain a neutral stance in conflicts. The highest decision-making body of the Movement is the International Conference which meets on the average of every four years to ensure unity in the work of the Movement and to discuss and act upon humanitarian issues of common interest.
