was born in 1902 in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, but spent his youth in the country. From the age of seventeen on, he travelled and lived abroad, chiefly on the European continent. He was influenced by expressionism and other modern currents in Germany and France. In the mid-twenties he was converted to Catholicism; his spiritual experiences are reflected in several books of an autobiographical nature, chiefly (Under the Holy Mountain), 1924. In 1927, he published his first important novel, (The Great Weaver from Kashmir). Laxness's religious period did not last long; during a visit to America he became attracted to socialism. (The Book of the People), 1929, is evidence of a change toward a socialist outlook. In 1930, Laxness settled in Iceland.
Laxness's main achievement consists of three novel cycles written during the thirties, dealing with the people of Iceland. 1931, and 1932, (both translated as Salka Valka), tell the story of a poor fisher girl; Sjalfstaettfolk (Independent People), 1934-35, treats the fortunes of small farmers, whereas the tetralogy

He is best-known for his fiction depicting the hardships of the working fishermen and farmers, and historical novels combining the tradition of sagas and mythology with national and social issues. With Gunnar Gunnarsson (1889-1975) and (1902-1983) Laxness was among the first internationally known Icelandic authors. " I spent my entire childhood in an environment in which the mighty of the earth had no place outside story books and dreams. Love of, and respect for, the humble routine of everyday life and its creatures was the only moral commandment which carried conviction when I was a child." (from Laxness's Nobel acceptance speech) Returning to Iceland, Laxness spent several years traveling through the country. During a stay in the United States, he lectured among others about fishing at a IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) club, but was not enthusiastic by their anarchist activities and believed that they opposed as much Marx and Lenin as Rockefeller and Morgan. In San Francisco he read James Joyce's Ulysses - later he wondered why Joyce is not counted among the most important surrealist writers. German authors, such as Thomas Mann, did not inspire him - according to Laxness, Mann was too professor-like and Goethe overrated. Perhaps the most important novelist for him was

Reykjavk as Halld³r Kiljan Gudj³nsson. Although Laxness was converted to Roman Catholicism briefly, The Weaver of Cashmere (1927) expressed his disillusionment with Christianity. His sympathies turned toward socialism and communism and are reflected in later novels. Salka Valka (1931–32, tr. 1936), Independent People (1934–35, tr. 1945–46), and The Light of the World (1937–40, tr. 1969) deal with Icelandic peasant life and describe an endless search for independence. Set in the late 17th cent., the complex Iceland's Bell (1943, tr. 2003), has been considered both his bleakest work of fiction and the centerpiece of his oeuvre. Written in the great narrative tradition of the Icelandic epics, his novels set a new style for modern Icelandic literature and often provoked bitter controversy. His later works, such as the original and often comic Christianity at Glacier (1969, tr. 1972, tr. as

This small web site is posted to provide English speakers with help in locating the available works of Iceland ’s great writer and Nobel laureate , Halldór Laxness (Halldór frá Laxnesi), born Halldór Guðjónsson in Reykjavík. His parents moved to the Laxnes farm in nearby Mosfellssveit parish when he was three, later taking his name from that farm and still later adding Kiljan after Irish St. Kilian. [i] Unfortunately, of his prodigious output ( see attached bibliography ), only a few works are readily available to English speakers. On the more fortunate side, recent interest in Laxness, perhaps sparked by two remarkable articles by novelist, poet and essayist Brad Leithauser (see below) in the New York Review of Books , has resulted in the issuance of Laxness titles long out of print, most recently of Iceland’s Bell Others are available from Icelandic publishers and, sometimes for dear prices, by searching used book dealers on the Internet. The best Laxness collections at libraries that I have found are at the Universities of Minnesota
