Isotopes Project,
Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
The Isotopes Project compiles, evaluates, and disseminates nuclear structure and radioactive decay data for basic and applied research. The Project is responsible for evaluating nuclear structure data for 41 mass chains (~500 nuclides), mainly in the region A=166-193, and provides a leadership role in the evaluation of neutron capture and radioactive decay data. These evaluations are incorporated into the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) and most are published in the journal Nuclear Data Sheets (Academic Press). The group also evaluates neutron capture gamma-ray data with the Institute of Isotope and Surface Chemistry (Budapest) The Isotopes Project/Lund collaboration has developed a Nuclear Science References Search and a computer version of a Table of Radioactive Isotopes for the WWW. The latter allows searches for decay gamma-ray and alpha-particle emissions. Isotope Explorer Version 2.2 (PC Windows 95/98/NT), a WWW-based software for searching, extracting, and displaying information from ENSDF and NSR, was released in January 1999, and the Internet Isotope Explorer Version 3.0

Ernest Lawrence about the time he came to the University of California at Berkeley, August 1931. Opening remarks by MR. SPROUL.
Copy of 1935 photograph of Ernest O. Lawrence. Our interest in the event we are celebrating does not arise solely from the fact that the Nobel Prize is the highest scholarly honor that the world has to offer to any man or woman for intellectual achievement. We recognize this fact, naturally, and pay our sincere respects to the young teacher who has made it possible for us to share some of the prestige which this award bestows. But, beyond this local and personal consideration, we recognize a real and special privilege in participating with representatives of our sister nation, Sweden, in the perpetuation of a dream of ideality conceived in the mind of one of her immortal sons, ALFRED NOBEL.

Lawrence, Ernest Orlando
Lawrence umìle vytvoøil radioaktivní fosfor a další izotopy využívané v medicínì vèetnì radioaktivního jódu využívaného pøi léèbì hypertyreózy.

Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is a member of the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce.
Ernest Orlando Lawrence founded this Lab, the oldest of the national laboratories, in 1931. Lawrence invented the cyclotron, which led to a Golden Age of particle physics and revolutionary discoveries about the nature of the universe. Known as a mecca of particle physics, Berkeley Lab long ago broadened its focus. Of our nine Nobel Prizes, five are in physics and four in chemistry. Today, we are a multiprogram lab where research in advanced materials, life sciences, energy efficiency, detectors and accelerators serves America's needs in technology and the environment.
Berkeley Lab is located on the hillside above one of the world's great universities the University of California at Berkeley. Altogether, we have some 4,000 employees, of which about 800 are students. Each year, the Lab also hosts more than 2,000 participating guests. We are managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Ernest Orlando Lawrence Biography Ernest Orlando Lawrence (August 8, 1901 - August 27, 1958) was an American physicist and Nobel laureate best known for his invention of the cyclotron.
Born in Canton, South Dakota, Lawrence attended Saint Olaf College in Minnesota, but transferred to the University of South Dakota after his first year. He earned his bachelor's degree 1922. He received his Ph.D. in physics at Yale University in 1925. He remained at Yale as a researcher on the photoelectric effect, becoming an assistant professor in 1927.
In 1928 he was appointed Associate Professor of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and two years later he became Professor, being the youngest at Berkeley.
He was called the "Atom Smasher," the man who "held the key" to atomic energy. "He wanted to do 'big physics,' the kind of work that could only be done on a large scale with a lot of people involved," said Herbert York, the first director of the Lawrence Livermore laboratory, as quoted on the lab's official Web site.
The invention that brought Lawrence to international fame started out as a sketch on a scrap of paper. While sitting in the library one evening, Lawrence glanced over a journal article and was intrigued by one of the diagrams. The idea was to produce very high energy particles required for atomic disintegration by means of a succession of very small "pushes." Lawrence told his colleagues that he had found a method for obtaining particles of very high energy without the use of any high voltage.

Also a Centennial Year for Ernest Orlando Lawrence
Ernest Orlando Lawrence was the founder of Lawrence Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories and the winner of the 1939 Nobel Prize for Physics for his invention of the cyclotron. He would have been 100 years old on August 8, 2001.
Ernest Lawrence and Enrico Fermi December 17— Ernest O. Lawrence and Enrico Fermi seemed to live parallel lives. They were born only a month apart, though an ocean away—Lawrence in South Dakota and Fermi in Rome, Italy. Both Lawrence and Fermi became interested in physics at an early age; both won Nobel Prizes only a year apart for work related to the discovery of radioactive elements; both contributed significantly as leaders in winning the science war during World War II; and sadly, both died premature deaths—Fermi was only 54 years old and Lawrence was 57. But this was not the end of their similarities. Prestigious science awards were established as memorials for both Fermi and Lawrence by President Eisenhower and the Atomic Energy Commission, now the U.S. Department of Energy.
