Why everything we think about fundamental physical laws needs to change, and why the greatest mysteries of physics are not at the ends of the universe but as close as the nearest ice cube or grain of salt. Not since Richard Feynman has a Nobel Prize-winning physicist written with as much panache as Robert Laughlin does in this revelatory and essential book. Laughlin proposes nothing less than a new way of understanding fundamental laws of science. In this age of superstring theories and Big-Bang cosmology, we're used to thinking of the unknown as being impossibly distant from our everyday lives. The edges of science, we're told, lie in the first nanofraction of a second of the Universe's existence, or else in realms so small that they can't be glimpsed even by the most sophisticated experimental techniques. But we haven't reached the end of science, Laughlin argues-only the end of reductionist thinking. If we consider the world of emergent properties instead, suddenly the deepest mysteries are as close as the nearest ice cube or grain of salt. And he goes farther: the most fundamental laws of physics-such as Newton's laws of motion and quantum mechanics -are in fact emergent. They are properties of large assemblages of matter, and when their exactness is examined too closely, it vanishes into nothing.

File your taxes on a postcard? Impossible!
Guess again, says Steve Forbes, in his important new book Flat Tax Revolution. In fact, countries around the world have freed their taxpayers to do just that—and we can too with a simple flat tax that will slash tax rates, spur economic growth, and put the IRS out of business.
In Flat Tax Revolution you'll learn: As Steve Forbes shows, the Flat Tax shouldn't be a partisan issue—it should be a taxpayer issue. And you can make it happen.

70. Physics Nobel Prize Awarded To German Physicist H.L. Störmer

http://www.germanembassy-india.org/news/GN98Nov/gn20.htm
Physics Nobel Prize awarded to German Physicist H. L. Störmer The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly to the German physicist Horst Ludwig Störmer and to two Americans: Daniel C. Tsui and Robert B. Laughlin. Electrons in new guises H. L. Störmer and D. C. Tsui made their discovery as early as 1982 in an experiment using extremely powerful magnetic fields and low temperatures. Within a year of the discovery R. B. Laughlin succeeded in explaining the experiment. Through theoretical analysis he showed that the electrons in a powerful magnetic field can condense to form a kind of quantum fluid related to the quantum fluids that occur in superconductivity and in liquid helium. What makes these fluids particularly important for researchers is that events in a drop of quantum fluid can provide more profound insights into the general inner structure and dynamics of matter. The contributions of the three laureates have thus led to yet another breakthrough in our understanding of quantum physics and to the development of new theoretical concepts of significance in many branches of modern physics. Quantum effects become visible As a young student in 1879, Edwin H. Hall had discovered an unexpected phenomenon: He found that if a thin gold plate is placed in a magnetic field at right angles to its surface, an electric current flowing along the plate can cause a potential drop at right angles both to the current and the magnetic field. Termed the Hall effect, this takes place because electrically charged particles (in this case electrons) moving in a magnetic field are influenced by a force and deflect laterally. Today, the Hall effect is used to determine the density of charge carriers in conductors and semi-conductors, and has become a standard tool in physics laboratories the world over.

The progress of science needs international cooperation among researchers to pursue its studies. This is the reason why I come to Sendai several times year and conduct joint studies with MAEKAWA Sadamichi and other professors at Tohoku University`s Metallic Materials Research Institute. The university`s academic environment is so good that other universities have become envious. Recently, I learned that there was an important discovery in the field of semiconductors and metallurgy. I believe that Sendai`s scientific atmosphere is quite active and wonderful.
Sendai`s most popular aspect is its size as a city. Although it is relatively far from Tokyo, the center of Japan`s economy, life here is easy-going and living expenses are moderate. That is why I believe it is an environment suited for creative work. My house in the United States is about 15 minutes away from the university by bike but Sendai does not give me this same commuting stress. Sendai seems very different from large cities like Tokyo and New York and feels more like San Francisco, where Stanford University is located. Both cities are an adequate size for people to enjoy shopping and eating out. (San Francisco and Sendai are both located at 38 North latitude.)

Hi Folks, Someone sent me a copy of this article, which I found interesting enough to share with the list. Has anyone here heard of Robert Laughlin? I hadn't. But he sounds like the next generation after Robert Rosen, to me. I'd be interested in your comments and perceptions. Judith PS: Tim, if the list security protocol rejects this posting because of the attachment, can you arrange to put it up on the list for me?

You Are More Important Than a Quark
By KEAY DAVIDSON
Published: June 19, 2005, Sunday A DIFFERENT UNIVERSE
Reinventing Physics
From the Bottom Down.
By Robert B. Laughlin.
Illustrated. 254 pp. Basic Books. $26. EVERY child knows how to learn what makes a toy work: bust it open. In that sense, we're all born reductionists, whose philosophy holds that anything can be explained by breaking it into its component parts. By analyzing them, one discovers how the parts act together to produce larger phenomena. If you crack open a windup clock, you can examine its gears to see what makes it tick. Some people resent reductionism because it sweeps away many mysteries. Behind spooky phenomena, reductionists have shown, are the ordinary ticktocks of nature's machinery, the concealed ropes and pulleys of cosmic-scale Penn and Teller tricks. Indeed, reductionism has reinforced the old philosophical suspicion that there is something vaguely unreal about ''reality'': as the Greek philosopher Democritus said, it's all just atoms and the void. To a hyper-reductionist, the invisibly small microworld is more ''real'' than everything else. Bigger objects cats, toasters, people, the sun, galactic superclusters are just second-order consequences. The atoms or quarks or leptons (or ''strings,'' if you follow the latest trendy theories) are what count, while you and I are just ephemera.
