Max Laue was born on October 9, 1879 at Pfaffendorf, near Koblenz. He was the son of Julius von Laue, an official in the German military administration, who was raised to hereditary nobility in 1913 and who was often sent to various towns, so that von Laue spent his youth in Brandenburg, Altona, Posen, Berlin and Strassburg, going to school in the three last-named cities. At the Protestant school at Strassburg he came under the influence of Professor Goering, who introduced him to the exact sciences.
Max Planck
. Here he attended lectures by O. Lummer on interference spectroscopy and heat radiation, the influence of which was shown in von Laue's dissertation on interference phenomena in plane-parallel plates.
In 1917, when the Institute for Physics was established at Berlin-Dahlem with Einstein
In 1951 he was elected Director of the Fritz Haber Institute for Physical Chemistry at Berlin-Dahlem and here he did much work on X-ray optics in collaboration with Borrmann and others.
In 1958 he retired and in 1959 his 80th birthday was celebrated in Berlin-Dahlem. He lived on, still actively at work, for another six months.

in full MAX THEODOR FELIX VON LAUE (b. Oct. 9, 1879, Pfaffendorf, near Koblenz, Ger.d. April 23, 1960, Berlin, W.Ger.), German recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1914 for his discovery of the diffraction of X rays in crystals. This enabled scientists to study the structure of crystals and hence marked the origin of solid-state physics, an important field in the development of modern electronics. See Laue diffraction pattern .) This was verified experimentally in 1912 by two of Laue's students working under his direction. This success demonstrated that X rays are electromagnetic radiations similar to light and also provided experimental proof that the atomic structure of crystals is a regularly repeating arrangement. Laue championed Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, did research on the quantum theory, the Compton effect (change of wavelength in light under certain conditions), and the disintegration of atoms. He became director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Berlin in 1919 and director of the Max Planck Institute for Research in Physical Chemistry, Berlin, in 1951.

Laue, Max Theodor Felix von
German physicist who was a pioneer in measuring the wavelength of X-rays by their diffraction through the closely spaced atoms in a crystal. His work led to the techniques of X-ray spectroscopy, used in nuclear physics, and X-ray diffraction, used to elucidate the molecular structure of complex biological materials. Nobel prize 1914.

at the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Berlin 1905-09, and worked at the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Munich 1909-14, when he became professor at Frankfurt. After World War I he became director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Berlin, resigning 1943 in protest against Nazi policies. Although Laue had refused to participate in the German atomic-energy project, he was interned in Britain by the Allies after the war. He returned to Germany 1946, and in 1951 became director of the Max Planck Institute for Research in Physical Chemistry.
In 1912 Laue's idea of passing X-rays through crystal was first tested, and provided experimental demonstration of the nature of both crystal structure and X-ray radiation. He had initially considered only the interaction between the atoms in the crystal and the radiation waves, but later included a correction for the forces acting between the atoms.

Max Theodor Felix Von Laue
Max Laue was born on October 9, 1879 at Pfaffendorf, near Koblenz. In 1898 he left school and for a year did his military service. He then went to the University of Strassburg where he studied mathematics, physics and chemistry; but soon he moved to the University of Göttingen, where he worked under Professor W. Voigt and Professor W. Abraham, who greatly influenced him. After a term at the University of Munich he went, in 1902, to the University of Berlin to work under Professor Max Planck (famous for the Planck's constant). After obtaining his doctorate at Berlin in 1903, von Laue spent two years at the University of Göttingen. In 1905 he was offered the post of assistant to Max Planck at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Berlin. In 1909 he went as Privatdozent to the University of Munich, where he lectured on optics, thermodynamics and the theory of relativity and in 1912 he became Professor of Physics at the University of Zurich. In 1958 he retired and in 1959 his 80th birthday was celebrated in Berlin-Dahlem. His best known work, for which he received the Nobel Prize for Physics for 1914, was his discovery of the diffraction of X-rays on crystals. Von Laue worked out the mathematical formulation of it and published it in 1912. It established the fact that X-rays are electromagnetic in nature and it opened the way to the later work of Sir William and Sir Lawrence Bragg
