* Greenland
Eiríkr raudi (Eirik the Red) emigrated from Jæren in Norway to Iceland in 981 or 982 in search of a new land. The reason for his departure was apparently some unexplained local murders. From Iceland, Eirik made lots of travels, and on one of them found Greenland, which was soon colonized. But it was his son, Leif, who was going to make the biggest discovery... (see below)
* America
The Icelandic born Leif Eirikson, son of Eirik the Red (see above), followed in his father's footsteps and discovered more new land: He found a land he called Helluland (Flatstone Land, probably Baffin Island), then he sailed to Markland (Forest Land, Labrador), and from there to Vinland . The account of his voyage is preserved in Gronlendinga saga. Eiriks saga rauda has a different version: according to this, Leif put out to sea from Norway, in order to sail home to Greenland; he was driven off course, and came to an unknown land where he found self-sown wheat and vine trees. A new expedition, led by Toifinnr Karlsefni, set out for this new land, and in connection with his expedition, the saga calls the land Vinland. Traditions, it will be seen, differ, but they agree that a new land far west in the Atlantic had been discovered. The year is about A.D. 1000.

    The Nobel prizes
    October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made. In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

    2) " Ski" As it applies to Lange Ski Boots
    This article concerns the Ske s used in Sku ing. For the place in Norway, see Sii , Norway. A ski is a long flat device designed to help the user slide over snow. A is pointed and curved upwards at the frontto prevent it from digging into the snow. The user is attached by a bindings to the ki er's Sii boots. Also, a ski may denote a similar device used forother purposes than Sii ing, e.g., for steering snowmobiles. Snow Sk s glide on snow because downward pressure, as well as heat from surface friction, melts the snow directly under theski. This creates a very thin layer of water directly under the Smi upon which the Sik glides. This is why if there is freezingrain that freezes to the bottom of the Sli (perhaps when carrying the kSi ), when set down on the snow, won't glide until the icewears off or is knocked off. Sku wax is used to increase the freezing point of water on the base of the Ske , easing the creationof the water layer.

    Norske nobelprisvinnere II
Odd Hassel (1897-1981) fikk Nobelprisen i kjemi i 1969 for sine studier av molekylet sykloheksan.
