... Main December 31, 2004 Karl Landsteiner? There are quite a lot Viennese historical personalities nobody really knows. What did they do? Why are they important?
Karl Landsteiner is one of them. Althought his picture was printed on the old 1000 Austrian Schilling banknotes he still was rather unknown. Karl Landsteiner , a Viennese medical doctor and immunologist, classified the bloods of human beings into the now well-known A, B, AB, and O groups and showed that transfusions between individuals of groups A or B do not result in the destruction of new blood cells and that this catastrophe occurs only when a person is transfused with the blood of a person belonging to a different group.
One of the most important medical discouveries of the 20th century.
For his discovery he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1930. Link Posted by johannes grenzfurthner (vienna) at December 31, 2004 01:26 PM

L F Haas In 1902 Landsteiner, an Austrian born American immunologist, announced one of the major medical discoveries of the century, that of the ABO blood group system. His work permitted successful blood transfusion, and the saving of so many lives. He was over 70 when in 1940 he announced the discovery of the rhesus (Rh) factor, then responsible for the serious illness or death of 1 in 200 white babies.

    Summary:
A talk about the discovery of our blood groups and the implications of that discovery.
    Transcript:
Robyn Williams: This year we celebrate the centenary of a discovery without which you could well be dead. Or never have been born. There’s a good chance too, that someone near and dear at least wouldn’t be alive. I’m talking about the discovery of blood groups, and from them, the elucidation of immunology in general.
The story is told by Dr Alan Baxter, Head of the Auto Immunity Group at the Centenary Institute in Sydney. His book, just published, is called ‘Germ Warfare’ and then, in case you’re misled and think of Saddam Hussein, it’s called ‘Breakthroughs in Immunology.’ It has a delightful Foreword by our latest Nobel Laureate, Peter Doherty.
    Well here’s Alan Baxter.
Alan Baxter: I have, before me, the record ‘At the Drop of Another Hat’, which was produced by George Martin, of Beatles fame. It is the second of three albums of songs and anecdotes by Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. Swann wrote the music and Flanders wrote the words. Their greatest hit was ‘The Hippopotamus Song’, an ode to mud, mud, glorious mud. On the record sleeve is a photograph of the pair of them at the Fortune Theatre in London. Swann, seated at the piano, is slight and bespectacled, reminiscent of a parish church organist. Flanders, a huge bear of a man, is hirsute and six foot three, and is seated in a wheelchair behind Swann. Usually they sang together. Occasionally, Swann would sing alone, accompanying himself while Flanders horsed around in his chair, raising laughs with his covert antics. Between the songs, Flanders would provide links, textual detritus, by way of introducing his next composition. His link for their song on the first and second laws of thermodynamics went something like this:

"for his discovery of human blood groups"
Karl Landsteiner was born in Vienna on June 14, 1868. His father, Leopold Landsteiner, a doctor of law, was a well-known journalist and newspaper publisher, who died when Karl was six years old. Karl was brought up by his mother, Fanny Hess, to whom he was so devoted that a death mask of her hung on his wall until he died. After leaving school, Landsteiner studied medicine at the University of Vienna, graduating in 1891. Even while he was a student he had begun to conduct biochemical research, and in 1891 he published a paper on the influence of diet on the composition of blood ash. To gain further knowledge of chemistry he spent the next five years in the laboratories of Hantzsch at Zurich, Emil Fischer at Wurzburg , and E. Bamberger at Munich. Returning to Vienna, Landsteiner resumed his medical studies at the Vienna General Hospital. In 1896 he became an assistant under Max von Gruber in the Hygiene Institute at Vienna. Even at this time he was interested in the mechanisms of immunity and in the nature of antibodies. From 1898 till 1908 he held the post of assistant in the University Department of Pathological Anatomy in Vienna, the Head of which was Professor A. Weichselbaum, who had discovered the bacterial cause of meningitis and with Fraenckel had discovered the pneumococcus. Here Landsteiner worked on morbid physiology rather than on morbid anatomy. In this, he was encouraged by Weichselbaum, in spite of the criticism of others in this Institute. In 1908 Weichselbaum secured his appointment as Prosector in the Wilhelminaspital in Vienna, where he remained until 1919. In 1911 he became Professor of Pathological Anatomy in the University of Vienna, but without the corresponding salary.

Landsteiner, Karl (szül. 1868. jun. 14. Bécs, Osztrák Császárság [Ausztria] – megh. 1943. jun. 26. New York, Amerikai Egyesült Államok), immunológus és patológus. Landsteinert a bécsi egyetemen a patológia egyetemi tanárává nevezték ki (1909–19), majd a New York-i Rockefeller Institute for Medical Reseaech professzora lett (1922–43). Könyve: The Specificity of Serological Reactions (1936) klasszikus írás, amely elôsegítette az immunokémia tudományának kialakulását. Vissza az Arcképtárba
