Ella Ryndina Translated from Russian by Arthur Gill In this brief memoir, I shall try to describe academician Lev Davidovich Landau; his parents, Lyubov Veniaminovna Harkavi-Landau and David Lvovich Landau (my grandparents); his sister Sofia Davidovna Landau (my mother); and my association with him and our encounters in various periods of our lives. My earliest memories of Dau (as Landau was known to those close to him) date back to 1937, when I was four years old. Into the quiet and calm of our home burst, unexpectedly, a strange kind of person. He brought an atmosphere of bustle, festivity, noisy and lengthy arguments, excitement, and shouting. Mom said that this was my Uncle Lyova [his familiar name], her brother, and that he had just arrived in Leningrad. He was very tall (especially from my four-year-old's perspective), very thin, very disheveled, and very lively. He couldn't stay in one spot for a second; he kept measuring our modest-sized room with his long legs, running back and forth. Not knowing what to talk to me about, he bent down, stuck his cold fingers in the scruff of my neck, cheerfully called me "chick," and continued running around the room.

Z Lev Davidovich Landau Biography Lev Davidovich Landau Landau was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Russian Empire (now Baky, Azerbaijan). His broad field of work included the theory of superconductivity and superfluidity, quantum electrodynamics, nuclear physics and particle physics. He developed the theory of second order phase transitions. In 1937 he became head of the theory department of the Institute for Physical Problems in the former Soviet Union; he was also a member of the Academy of Sciences. He was arrested in 1938, during the Great Purge, but released one year later. He suffered a major car accident in 1962 which precluded him from further scientific activities. Many physical effects are named after Landau, for example Landau pole, Landau buttocks, and Landau damping. His research group in 1965 transformed into what is now known as Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics. He was a Nobel Laureate in Physics for the year 1962 for his pioneering theories of condensed matter, especially liquid helium. He is also admired for a prolific series of textbooks on theoretical physics, co-authored with E. M. Lifshitz. He died in Moscow in 1968 and was interred there in Novodevichy Cemetery.
