About the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File What is the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File? It is a collection of hard copy files with information on scientists who were prominent in the early 1970s. It consists of folders containing photographs, biographical information and bibliographies of 1200 American and 100 foreign scientists and engineers. How was the collection formed? The collection was formed during the years 1972 - 75. The Science and Technology Division contacted well known and lesser known scientists and engineers of the mid-twentieth century, and asked them to donate the materials. Those asked included:
  • Members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineers Scientists listed in Who's Who in Science and Engineers of Distinction Nobel Prize recipients and winners of the National Medal for Science Members of Scientists in Search of Their Consciences.

ULTRASONIC INTRAPIPE DIAGNOSTICS TECHNIQUE The technique known so far includes the following: the continuous movement of the flaw detector fitted with an acoustical-electrical transducer along the pipe wall, the generation of ultrasonic oscillations by the acoustical-electrical pulse transducer, the non-contact transmission of ultrasonic oscillation pulses through the medium pumped to the pipe wall, the excitation of ultrasonic oscillations inside the pipe wall, the reflection of ultrasonic oscillations from the inhomogeinities of the pipe wall, the transmission of reflected ultrasonic oscillations from the pipe wall to the acoustical-electrical transducer, the registration of reflected ultrasonic oscillations and the identification of the nature, size and location of defects detected on the pipe wall. Humboldtians with Nobel Prizes
Alfred Nobel The Nobel Prizes awarded to John B. Fenn and Masatoshi Koshiba in autumn 2002 mean there are two further laureates enriching the Humboldt Foundation's global network. The number of Humboldtians who have received Nobel Prizes has now increased to 34. The Nobel Foundation will probably announce the 2003 Nobel Prize Winners in mid-October. There is also a close connexion between the presidency of the Humboldt Foundation and the Nobel Prize. Of the five presidents in office since the Humboldt Foundation was re-established in 1953, three were themselves recipients: Werner Heisenberg (Physics, 1932), Feodor Lynen (Medicine, 1946), Wolfgang Paul (Physics, 1989).

Statesville, N.C.

Mrs. Virginia Bishop Barnette, 86, of 574 Jane Sowers Road, Statesville, N.C., and formerly of Greenville, S.C., died Saturday evening, Dec. 16, 2000, at the Maple Leaf Health Care of Statesville, N.C. She had been in declining health for a number of years but had just recently become a resident of the Health Care facility. She was born in Greenville, S.C., on April 7, 1914, and was the daughter of the late Jesse Bishop and Parrot Keller Bishop. She was married to John Wadd Barnette, who died in 1978. While in Greenville, she was a member of the East North Street Baptist Church and was a retired sewing machine operator. She moved to Statesville, N.C., in 1982 to make her home near her daughter. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara B. Ellenburg and her husband, Larry, of Statesville, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Vencie Stover of Greenville; two grandsons, Tim and Dale Ellenburg, and one great-grandchild, Erin Ellenburg, all of Statesville, N.C.
