U.N.: Suu Kyi refuses freedom
Suu Kyi returned home after three months in military detention. Story Tools YANGON, Myanmar (Reuters) Myanmar's generals have freed democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest, but she is refusing to accept liberty until 35 colleagues are released from detention, U.N. envoy Paulo Sergio Pinheiro said on Saturday. "She will not accept to have any privilege or any access to freedom of movement until everyone detained since May 30 has been released," Pinheiro told a news conference. The U.N. human rights envoy said he had been told by the ruling generals during talks in Yangon this week that Suu Kyi, detained after a bloody clash between her followers and government supporters, was no longer under house arrest. Pinheiro, who spent two hours with Suu Kyi on Thursday, said she demanded the release of 35 colleagues in the National League for Democracy before she would consider herself free. She also demanded an inquiry into the May 30 violence, which each side blames on the other, and for those responsible to be held accountable, he said.

(CNN) A U.N. envoy has visited the home of Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, where she is under house arrest, to check on her health, sources told CNN. Suu Kyi underwent surgery for a gynecological condition at a Yangon hospital and was discharged last week. U.N. envoy Razali Ismail arrived in the South Asian country Tuesday on a three-day mission to secure Suu Kyi's release from house arrest. He arrived at Suu Kyi's lakeside residence in Yangon on Wednesday after meeting Myanmar's prime minister, General Khin Nyunt. Ismail is the first outsider to visit Suu Kyi since she was released from the hospital. Her doctor, Dr. Tin Myo Win, said Myanmar authorities had told him Suu Kyi was 100 percent healthy. Suu Kyi, 58, whose pro-democracy efforts in her country earned her the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, was detained on May 30. She had been held for months in an undisclosed location after a clash between her supporters and a pro-government group.

WASHINGTON (CNN) The U.S. State Department has reiterated its claim that Myanmar dissident leader Aung San Suu Kyi is on a hunger strike to protest her detention by the country's military government, despite the Myanmar government's questioning of that claim. "We have what we consider credible reporting from our embassy, but I'm not in a position to go through the sourcing," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Tuesday, adding that the United States has information from sources other than the media. "We do remain deeply concerned about her situation," Boucher said. A senior State Department official, who asked not to be identified, said Aung San Suu Kyi's supporters inside Myanmar may not be in a position to receive information about her condition. The Myanmar activist, whose pro-democracy efforts earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, has been in military custody for three months since a clash between her supporters and a pro-government group.

WASHINGTON (CNN) The U.S. has expressed relief at a Red Cross report that says Aung San Suu Kyi is not on a hunger strike, but said the Myanmar dissident leader was nevertheless not being treated properly. "Her situation remains unacceptable," a State Department spokeswoman said Sunday after receiving a report from the Red Cross, which visited her the day before. "Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners should be released immediately." Suu Kyi, whose pro-democracy efforts earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, has been in military custody for more than three months, since a clash between her supporters and a pro-government group. Last Sunday, the State Department said Suu Kyi was on a hunger strike to protest her detention by the country's military government and added, "Burmese authorities have full responsibility for her health, having placed her in so-called protective custody since a May 30 premeditated attack on her convoy."

(CNN) Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is recuperating at home following her discharge from a Yangon hospital, the Myanmar government said Friday in a written statement. She is reported to be "100 percent healthy" after undergoing surgery a week ago for a gynecological condition at the privately run Asia Royal Hospital. She will, however, remain under house arrest at her lakeside home in Yangon, according to her doctor, Tin Myo Wyn. Suu Kyi, whose pro-democracy efforts earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, had been in military custody for more than three months following a clash on May 30 between her supporters and a group aligned with the ruling junta. Her plight sparked international outrage and Western sanctions against the ruling regime, especially after U.S. reports last month that Suu Kyi was on a hunger strike to protest against her detention.
