Aung San Suu Kyi : 'We've got to move forward'
Her compatriots call her the 'iron butterfly', a name that evokes both her non-violent combat for democracy and the strength of her character. Aung San Suu Kyi, 57, talks to the new Courier about the political evolution of her country since her release from house arrest in May last year.
You recently received the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Prize for Tolerance and Non-Violence. Over many years, you have been given countless international awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. How helpful have these awards been for you?
What are you expecting from the international community and especially from the UN?

We would like to see the UN standing very firmly by the General Assembly resolution(1) on Burma and to try to implement the terms of the resolution as quickly as possible. And we would like the whole international community to support the UN and this.
What has been the impact of international sanctions?

HRW Press Release, June 3, 2003 "Asian leaders should insist on the release of political detainees, and, in the interim, that diplomats and humanitarian agencies be allowed unmonitored visits to them. Asian leaders have said they would press for change in Burma. It's time to make good on that commitment." Brad Adams, executive director of the Asia Division of Human Rights Watch Reports out of Burma indicate that Suu Kyi is on a hunger strike and in poor health. It is impossible to verify the reports because the Burmese government has held Suu Kyi incommunicado since May 30. The government denies the reports.

"Burma's leaders should release all political prisoners. They should also lift severe restrictions on free association, assembly and expression so that open political activity can resume. This would show they are committed to an irreversible process of reform."
The ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) holds more than 1,000 political prisoners, including members of ethnic minority groups and 17 elected members of parliament.

December 2, 2004 Statement on Aung San Suu Kyi
The United States continues strongly to support Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi and the Burmese people in their struggle for freedom in Burma. As the President has said, "Aung San Suu Kyi is a courageous reformer and a remarkable woman who remains under house arrest for her efforts to bring democracy to her nation." Thus we note with deep concern reports that the Burmese regime has extended her detention for an additional year. If true, this represents a return to a pattern of unacceptable backtracking on commitments the regime itself has made to move toward democracy and national reconciliation. We had hoped that some recent prisoner releases were a sign that the regime was beginning to move in the right direction, but the continued detention of Aung San Suu Kyi seems to indicate that this is not the case. Some of Burma's neighbors have engaged the regime in an effort to encourage positive change, but these overtures have been consistently rebuffed. The generals in Rangoon must come to understand that they cannot indefinitely suppress the legitimate aspirations of the Burmese people and resist the worldwide march to freedom and democracy. Once again, the United States calls on the regime to release Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners immediately and unconditionally, and to begin taking other meaningful steps toward national reconciliation, democracy, and improved human rights. Only then will Burma be able to rejoin the community of nations and ensure security and prosperity for its people.

The Latest on Daw* Aung San Suu Kyi Aung San Suu Kyi I admit, I hadn't really checked up on her for quite some time. But the latest was from the 4th of March: Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is still under house arrest at her lakeside home in Rangoon and the country’s military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) recently extended her detention to another year. Here's Part 1 and Part 2 of an interview done with her almost exactly a year ago. Someone remind me: For what purpose was the UN formed, again? Read More "The Latest on Daw* Aung San Suu Kyi" »

From the Journal Sentinel Last Updated: June 12, 2003 Joined by visiting Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of Thailand, President Bush called recently for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi, a courageous champion of democracy and freedom in Myanmar, also know by its former name, Burma. But it will take more than feeble protests to get the attention of the generals who run Burma. What's needed are sharp words and sharper actions. Suu Kyi and her party won a parliamentary election in 1990, but the results were promptly scrapped, and she has spent much of the time since then under house arrest. In May 2002, after two years of negotiations, she was released with a promise from the military government to engage in substantive negotiations on political issues. The generals never delivered on that promise. Worse, Suu Kyi was rearrested on May 30 after she and her supporters were attacked by what diplomats and others have said were military-backed thugs. An envoy from the United Nations who visited Suu Kyi this week reported that she appears to be in good health and probably will be released fairly soon.

's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was not on hunger strike as the United States government claimed, said Thai Foreign Minister Surakiat Sathirathai on Thursday.
"As far as I know, there's no hunger strike for the opposition leader," Surakiat told reporters.
The US State Department on Tuesday said Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), was on hunger strike in protest of her detention of three months by the Myanmar government, which cited protection of the opposition leader as the reason for the arrest.
Surakiat also said the Thai government supported the national reconciliation plan announced on Saturday by Myanmar's new prime minister Khin Nyunt.
During his first public speech since appointment, Khin Nyunt announced a seven-point roadmap for democracy, saying that his country would resume the long-suspended national convention but giving no time frame.
