Biography

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Rangoon, Burma, on June 19, 1945. She is the daughter of Daw Khin Kyi, Burma's only woman ambassador (to India and Nepal), and late national leader General Aung San, the architect of Burma's independence, who was assassinated in Rangoon on July 19, 1947, along with six members of his pre-independence cabinet.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was educated in Rangoon until the age of 15 and continued her studies at Delhi University when she accompanied her Ambassador mother to New Delhi. She completed her BA in philosophy, politics, and economics at St. Hugh's College, Oxford University, and was elected Honorary Fellow in 1990. From 1969 to 1971, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was the Assistant Secretary, Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions, United Nations Secretariat, New York. In 1972, Daw Aung Suu Kyi worked as the Research Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bhutan, and got married to a British scholar Dr. Michael Aris. In Manila, activists rally and offer a birthday cake for Aung San Suu Kyi. Photo: AFP BANGKOK—Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will spend her 60th birthday under house arrest in Rangoon, as overseas groups use the occasion to press for her release amid hopes of conciliatory moves from the ruling junta. “Global protests will be staged this week, thousands of birthday cards have been sent and a pop star will release a song to draw attention to the plight of Burma’s pro-democracy leader,” a news story on Aung San Suu Kyi’s Web site said. The Nobel Laureate, who was detained on May 30, 2003 after her motorcade was ambushed by government-backed mobs, will mark her 60th birthday and 2,523rd day under military detention on Sunday, the report said. “Isolated from the outside world and her decimated political party, Aung San Suu Kyi is confined to a now dilapidated, two-storey family house sealed off around the clock by security forces in the Rangoon,” it said.

Aung San Suu Kyi calls her fight for democracy Myanmar's "second struggle for independence" By Joe Havely CNN Hong Kong (CNN) Her supporters call her simply 'The Lady'. In 1990 they turned out in vast numbers to vote for Aung San Suu Kyi and her party to become the new government of Myanmar, formerly Burma. The result, an 82 percent landslide in favor of the National League for Democracy (NLD), took the country's military rulers by surprise. Refusing to acknowledge defeat, the generals claimed foreigners and communists had rigged the election. In the subsequent weeks hundreds of NLD members were rounded up and jailed. According to human rights groups, more than a thousand remain in their cells, never having been convicted of a crime.

by Melody Itulid Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is a Burmese political leader. When she won the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee released a statement about her in recognition of her work. Part of it stated that: "She became the leader of a democratic opposition which employs non-violent means to resist a regime characterized by brutality. She also emphasizes the need for conciliation between the sharply divided regions and ethnic groups in her country...Suu Kyi's struggle is one of the most extraordinary examples of civil courage in Asia in recent decades. She has become an important symbol in the struggle against oppression...the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to honour this woman for her unflagging efforts and to show its support for the many people throughout the world who are striving to attain democracy, human rights and ethnic conciliation by peaceful means" (Aung, p. 236-237). Also, the European Parliament of twelve countries awarded her the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 for her nonviolent efforts in trying to restore democracy to Burma. From 1989-1995, she was placed under house arrest by the military dictatorship that rules Burma. She is the daughter of Aung San , a martyred national hero of independent Burma and a liberation leader, and Khin Kyi, a prominent Burmese diplomat. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was influenced by Mohandas Gandhi in the philosophy of non-violent protest as a means of bringing democracy to her country.

In the decade that has followed, she has struggled continuously for democracy and peaceful change in Burma, and has continued unflinchingly to uphold the ideals which are symbolised by the prize. She has paid a high price for her principles, as have her supporters. But she remains an inspiration, to the people in Burma, and beyond. I urge the Burmese authorities to move swiftly towards democracy, and to release the remaining political prisoners." See also: Top Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner Directorate General External Relations

July 17th 2003 Aung San Suu Kyi still remains in custody in Myanmar today, despite a strong and unusually direct and unified appeal by ASEAN countries and other international bodies and countries for her release. The international media has dropped the story for the time-being, and so is business in Burma/Myanmar, as the Burmese ruling junta proves that little has changed and international pressure will do little to release their grip on dissendent opinion. The US is in the midst of implementing trade sanctions with Burma, and ASEAN is under pressure to prove it's influence. June 2003 While the disappearance of Aung San Suu Kyi as the Myanmar junta arrested her and supporters and placed them in "protective custody" may seem only of passing interest to our readers, this never-ending story has significant implications for governance in South East Asia, and the country-risk and economic risk of doing business in Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi is painted by the West as a hero of democracy. In Malaysia and some Asian nations she is characterised by the government press as a Western Uncle Tom. Nevertheless the UN Special Envoy Razali Ismail is Malaysian and was credited by many worldwide with the success at obtaining Aung San Suu Kyi's release last year, and spun as an example of the "Asian way" of negotiating by Malaysia's elite. This time, Ramzali is back into the fray, and as of the second week in June, concerns are heightening that Aung San Suu Kyi may well have been injured. No news since her disappearance, to many, is bad news.

On 30 May, 2003, following an attack on her convoy and massacre of up to 70 of her supporters, Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Prize winner from Burma (Myanmar), was arrested and taken into "protective custody" by the country's military junta. More than 100 supporters who were with her that day are unaccounted for.
The daughter of Burma's former democratic leader, and a non-violent defender of human rights and freedom, her party was elected to power by more than 80% in a 1990. A military junta refused to allow the elected Parliament to convene, and placed Aung San Suu Kyi under arrest.
Burma, a country of approximately 50 million, has resources similar to Thailand's. However, with a corrupt regime at the helm, instead of prosperity the country suffers from:
  • Millions of men, women and children, most from ethnic minorities, in forced labour One and a half million refugees within Burma's borders Around 1500 political prisoners 50,000 child soldiers - more than any other country in the world.

Bangkok, Thailand Crowds of supporters press in on Aung San Suu Kyi upon her release from a 20-month house arrest, May 6, 2002 (Photo: AFP). The release of Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from a 20-month house arrest raises high hopes that dialogue between the opposition and the military regime, known as the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), is moving forward in a tangible way. The junta said it had turned a new page for the people of Myanmar, formerly Burma, and the international community. Suu Kyi, the opposition leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), can now travel unrestricted throughout the country. She used the first day of her freedom to visit her party’s headquarters and declared that she would continue to fight for democracy. Burmese in exiles in Bangkok and around the world, however, have mixed feelings about the news. While they welcome the release, they are also wary of the junta’s tactics. According to reports, the refusal of Western countries to invest in Myanmar and the resource crunch the country has been facing contributed to the junta’s decision to release Suu Kyi. Additionally, she has been arrested and released before, after traveling outside Yangon to do political work. The Burmese exiles want the estimated 1,500 prisoners jailed since 1988 to be set free and the outcome of the May 1990 election, in which the NLD won 59.9 percent of the votes, recognized.
