Aung San Suu Kyi Secures A Victory Over The Burmese Junta
by Richard S. Ehrlich BANGKOK, Thailand Muted in her gloomy, lakeside mansion in Burma by a decade of depressing house arrest, the world's most famous political prisoner, Aung San Suu Kyi, scored a psychological victory when she helped force the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to ditch her country's military regime. Burma, also known as Myanmar, had been anxiously squelching international condemnation of its human rights violations extrajudicial executions, torture and forced labor while hoping to be the next host of ASEAN, a mostly profit-minded group which wants good relations with the United States, Europe and other trading partners. ASEAN includes Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines and Vietnam, and rotates its chairmanship.

To launch a campaign against the arrest of Democratic leaders in Burma (Myanmar)
Dear Colleagues and Friends of Burma,
This letter is being sent to you by Zaw Win, Democratic Burmese Student activist currently residing in New York.
I wish to draws your attention to the situation On May 30, 2003, The military regime and their affiliated thugs brutal ambushed the motorcade of Aung San Suu Kyi, 1991 Nobel Peace Laureate and other leaders of the National League for Democracy party, near Depeyin, Upper Burma.
The attack was planned in advance by military leaders and instigated by the regime-created "Union Solidarity and Development Association" and involved paid criminal prisoners dressed as monks, as well as armed troops. Hundreds of men attacked the democracy activists with clubs, spears, and guns, killing as many as one hundred and injuring many more. In the time since, the regime has rounded up and detained dozens of people and many more are missing - some feared dead. Aung San Suu Kyi, 58, and other NLD leaders, including Vice Chairman U Tin Oo, 75, have also been held prisoner since.
The attack reveals just how desperate the Burmese regime has become as support for democracy has grown since the release of Aung San Suu Kyi over a year ago. They were obviously keen to cut short the NLD’s democracy tour which started just over a month ago and which had huge resonance.

Happy birthday, Aung San Suu Kyi
International Herald Tribune SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 2005 On Sunday, Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the nonviolent democratic movement in Myanmar, turns 60. She has been detained for nearly 10 years by the military junta in power, who changed the country's name from Burma. To this day, she is the only Nobel Peace Prize laureate to be deprived of freedom. In 1990, Aung San Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy, or NLD, won the only democratic election ever organized in Myanmar, gaining more than 80 percent of the seats. However, the junta refused to accept the election results and hand power to the democrats. It reinforced its tyrannical regime and made Myanmar one of the worst dictatorships worldwide, regularly condemned by the International Labor Organization and the United Nations. More than 1,300 political prisoners are behind bars and are submitted to all forms of torture. In the last 10 years, dozens of elected NLD representatives have been tortured, have died in prison or have been forced into exile. The local population is denied access to education, health and the freedom it has been striving for.

Burma - 60th Birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi
On Sunday, June 19, Aung San Suu Kyi will spend her 60th birthday under house arrest, isolated from her family, friends and the Burmese people. Aung San Suu Kyi continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration for those who yearn for freedom in Burma and throughout the world. Despite the Burmese junta’s misguided efforts to silence her, Aung San Suu Kyi’s message of freedom and democracy has only become stronger as she continues to stand up to Burma’s oppressors. On the eve of Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday, the United States urges the international community to work together to end the repression of this brutal regime. The appropriate way to honor Aung San Suu Kyi is by championing the cause of all political prisoners, and by supporting the brave democrats of Burma, who struggle daily in the cause of freedom.
Countries in the Community of Democracies should stand united in sustained support for a free Burma. Along with the international community, the United States calls upon Burma's military rulers to release Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo, Hkun Htun Oo and all other political prisoners immediately and unconditionally, and to include Burma's democratic opposition and ethnic minorities in a meaningful dialogue that leads to genuine national reconciliation and the establishment of democracy.
This is a critical time for Burma. While the winds of reform and democracy are blowing throughout the world, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Burma continue to deteriorate. Burma is the only country where a Nobel Laureate is under house arrest for simply acting as a democratic leader. The United States.looks forward to the day when Aung San Suu Kyi can celebrate her birthday in a democratic and free Burma.

Burma Restrictions on Aung San Suu Kyi
The United States is deeply concerned for the welfare of 1991 Nobel Laureate and National League for Democracy General Secretary Aung San Suu Kyi,who remains under house arrest following the May 2003 attack on both her and her supporters. Over the past two days, the Burmese junta has further restricted Aung San Suu Kyi’s access to medical care and ordered most of her personal staff to leave the compound. We hold the Burmese junta solely responsible for her health, safety, security and well-being. The Burmese junta continues to ignore the demands of its citizens and the international community for democracy and the free exercise and protection of human rights. We call on the junta to release Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo and all political prisoners immediately and unconditionally, to engage the democratic opposition and ethnic minority groups in a meaningful dialogue leading to genuine national reconciliation and the establishment of democracy, to allow the National League for Democracy to reopen its offices nationwide, and to respect and ensure the free exercise of the fundamental human rights of the people of Burma.

May 30th marked the second anniversary of the latest attack on Nobel peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters. The Nobel Laureate and National League for Democracy general secretary was detained in May 2003 after Burmese junta-affiliated thugs brutally attacked her convoy, which included other members of the National League for Democracy party, their supporters and innocent bystanders. The Burmese junta continues to ignore requests by the international community to investigate the attack, and refuses to take responsibility or hold accountable those officials reportedly involved. And conditions are getting worse for Aung San Suu Kyi. In December, the junta ordered her staff to leave the compound where she lives. The junta also restricted the visits of her personal physician, limiting her access to health care.

She is the daughter of former Burmese premier Aung San Her liberties continued to be restricted by the Myanmar government, which refused visas to enable her family to visit her, while Suu Kyi believed that she would be refused re-entry to her country if she was to leave. Her situation grabbed international attention in 1998, when it was announced that her husband, Oxford academic Michael Aris, whom she met when she too was at Oxford University, England, was dying of cancer. He was refused a visa and died in March 1999, having not seen his wife for two years. In August 2000, Suu Kyi was prevented from leaving the capital, Yangon, to go a nearby town to meet members of her League. She was involved in a nine-day roadside protest after which she was put under house arrest for two weeks, as she had been held from 1989 to 1995. This latest restriction on Suu Kyi, who has not been allowed to move freely since 1989, prompted renewed international condemnation of the military government, who also searched the offices of her party, and failed to enter into dialogue with Suu Kyi, or to take any other steps towards reform. She was released from a further 20 months of house arrest in June 2002.

In 1947, Burma achieved independence from Britain. Following the subsequent rise of a military dictatorship many courageous people have worked for political freedom in Burma, among them Aung San Suu Kyi. Aung San is a leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), whose election in 1990 would have made her the first democratic political leader in recent history. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was born in 1945 in Rangoon, Burma. Her father, General Aung San, had been a national hero who had helped Burma to gain its independence from Britain. Her mother was Daw Khin Kyi. Aung San was only two years old when her father was assassinated. She remained in Burma until her mother received an appointment as Burmese ambassador to India and Nepal in 1960. The appointment was in Delhi. Aung San studied at Delhi, and later Oxford University, where she received a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. In the years that followed Aung San worked as Assistant Secretary of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions and as a research officer for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bhutan. There she married Dr. Michael Aris and returned to Oxford, England, where she worked and raised two children. In March of 1988, Aung San returned to Burma to care for her mother, whose health was failing. At the same time, students were igniting protest rallies against the Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP) regime. These protests coincided with the abdication of the Chairman of the Socialist Party, after which pro-democracy protests spread throughout the nation.

"Some believe that the only way to remove the authoritarian regime and replace it with a democratic one is through violent means. I would like to set the precedent of political change through political settlement, not through violence. " BY DAVID WALLECHINSKY In the exotic southeast Asian nation of Burma, a country of 46 million people, a battle of wills of heroic proportions is taking place. On one side is a brutal military dictatorship known as SLORC (State Law and Order Restoration Council). On the other is a slim, 51-year-old mother of two named Aung San Suu Kyi, who is leading her people in a nonviolent struggle for democracy. For six years, from 1989 to 1995, Aung San Suu Kyi (pronounced Awng-Sahn-Soo-Chee) was kept in isolation under house arrest for speaking out against the government, which has used torture and forced labor and which refuses to hand over power, even though it lost a national election. In 1991, still under house arrest. Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Following her release in 1995, she continued to challenge the junta, every weekend addressing the thousands of followers who congregated in front of the gate to her house and across the street. It had become the only forum for free speech in the country. But since September the government has cracked down on these gatherings. It has amested more than 1000 people usually in the middle of the night And Aung San Suu Kyi is again restricted to her home.
