BURMANET: INTERVIEW WITH DAW AUNG SAN SUU KYI
by C. Fink
BurmaNet (July 18, 1995)
(These comments and observations come from a private 15 minute interview in Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's house on the afternoon of July 18th. Like all other foreign journalists who have interviewed her, I was photographed and videotaped by the "guards" who were on duty at the gate. Aung San Suu Kyi has held two press conferences and many private interviews with journalists in the days since her release. Every day she also meets with representatives of various embassies, NLD party members, and other close friends. At 3pm every afternoon, she climbs up a step-ladder inside her gate to give a ten minute speech in Burmese to Burmese citizens who have come to see her. The crowd, which numbers several hundred each day, respond with delight to her jokes and willingly agree to her pleas for both support and restraint.) Despite her busy morning of meetings with NLD party members, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi looked vibrant and full of energy when she met with me at 1:30 this afternoon. The fresh flower clipped into her neat bun suggested her unfailing optimism, although the political dilemmas she is facing would dishearten virtually anyone else in her position. The SLORC has not made any further moves to release political prisoners nor have they lifted regulations on political activities or relaxed censorship. While many observers have commented on her frequently stated willingness to negotiate with the SLORC on almost any issue, her demeanor and many of her comments indicate that she will not rest until democracy is restored.

Aung San Suu Kyi Aung San Suu Kyi was born on January 19, 1945 in the city of Rangoon, Burma. General Aung San Kyi and Daw Khin Kyi brought her into the world. Her father, General Aung Sun, was the national leader of Burma until his assassination on July 17, 1947. His death would be one of the main contributors to her fight for peace and independence for the country of Burma. She was educated in the city of Rangoon until she was fifteen years old. Her mother would soon become Burmese ambassador to India and Nepal. In 1960 she would travel with her mother to these other countries. While living in these foreign lands she studied politics at Delhi University. She continued her education at St. Hugh's College and Oxford University where she received a BA in economics, politics, and philosophy. During the next several years she worked abroad and met her future husband Dr. Michael Aris. The couple soon married and had two children. The elections were going to be held in May of 1990 in which she was declared ineligible. Even though she was unable to run in the election the National League for Democracy had a landslide victory even without her present. She would spend the next six years of her life at her lakeside villa in Rangoon to serve her house arrest. She wrote many speeches and books that were published. During this time she received many awards dealing with her great aspiration toward peace. However, maybe her greatest honor was the Nobel Peace Prize that she won on October 14, 1991. With her prize money of 1.3 million dollars she established a health and education trust for the people of Burma.

  • Aung San Suu Kyi Even when she's under house arrest, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning resistance leader is a symbol of hope in the struggle for democracy in Burma. By David Rubien A question that has to haunt anyone pondering the predicament of Burma's democratic resistance leader Aung San Suu Kyi is: Why hasn't she been killed? She is, after all, a major thorn in the sides of the military dictators who have been driving the Southeast Asian nation to ruin for the past 38 years. Certainly she would not be the first popular opposition leader to be murdered by despots. The simple answer is they missed their chance. Suu Kyi (pronounced soo chee), 55, was first confined to house arrest in 1989, months before her National League of Democracy won Burma's last election in a landslide. The dictators ignored the election results and proceeded to arrest all the NLD leaders they hadn't already jailed previously, and continued the kind of repression that had been the junta's modus operandi since 1962. But in 1991 something happened that the dictators couldn't have anticipated. Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize. The eyes of the world suddenly became focused on this slight, Buddhist woman locked in her home, forbidden from picking up her award. But her captors came under international gaze as well, and killing Suu Kyi now would be too reckless a move even for a junta that makes murder and slavery cornerstones of its policy.
