A History of the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research Richard Kuhn's Final Years: the Chemistry of Biological Resistance Richard Kuhn served as Director of the MPImF Department of Chemistry for nearly four decades. When Gerard Pomerat, the European representative of the Rockefeller Foundation, returned to Richard Kuhn's Chemistry Department in 1953, he was stunned by what he saw. Only four years earlier, he had found Kuhn demoralized by external and internal political distractions, struggling desperately to find salaries and research materials. Since that time, however, the Marshall Plan had primed the German economic recovery, with a new democratic government and a revived private sector pumping money into basic science research. The crippling difficulties associated with the military occupation of Heidelberg and the MPImF were a part of the past. Pomerat noted that Kuhn's department now rivaled the best equipped laboratories in the United States. Moreover, the uncomfortable stigma associated with the war years was beginning to fade, allowing Kuhn to reestablish important contacts with scientists outside of Germany. Kuhn's great success in the area of bioresistance enabled him to resume purely theoretical topics in organic chemistry. Several assistants devoted their time to structural investigations of cumulenes and radicals. A small group of scientists, led by Karl Hausser, experimented with new techniques for chemical structural analysis, such as electron spin resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance. Many of the methods Kuhn and his colleagues developed during these years for isolation, analysis and synthesis of the compounds they studied were adopted by scientists around the world.

The UMBC Founders Oral History Project builds on a variety of materials in the university archives and other offices, including a series of interviews conducted some years ago for the university's thirtieth anniversary by Dr. Edward Orser. Project staff have reviewed all extant interviews, conducted additional research for materials not yet transferred to the archives, and engaged the help of former and current university officials to develop questions, prioritized lists of interviewees, and a management plan. New interviews began in August 2001 and are continuing. This new series is being done using state of the art digital cameras, which will result in much more stable archival media. Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Richard Kuhn The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1938 Richard Kuhn was born in Vienna on December 3, 1900. His father, Richard Clemens Kuhn, was an engineer and his mother Angelika Rodler was a teacher in elementary schools. He studided chemistry at Vienna University and later at Munich under R. Willstatter. Kuhn investigated theoretical problems of organic chemistry as well as extensive fields in biochemistry. For a period of twenty years Kuhn investigated compounds containing double bonds which proved to be of great interest in connection with the study of the chemical nature of the cartenoids. He discovered eight new types of these and was able to analyze their constitution. He also carried out important work on vitamin B and the antidermatitis vitamin B . For his work in this important field Kuhn was awarded the Nobel Prize In Chemistry in 1938. Richard Kuhn married Daisy Hartmann in 1928 and has two sons and four daughters. Richard Kuhn died in 1967.

FOOTNOTES It is the nature of all greatness not to be exact, and great trade will always be attended with considerable abuses Edmund Burke [*pg 233] INTRODUCTION Pollution trading has been touted as a great innovation in environmental policy making and a key tool for sustainable development. Pollution trading allows a polluter to forego reductions in pollution (or increase pollution) at its own facility in exchange for reducing emissions elsewhere or by purchasing credits which represent someone else's pollution reduction. Pollution trading advocates argue that this approach saves money, promotes innovative technology, and continuously reduces pollution through market incentives. In contrast, they claim that technology-based regulations, commonly referred to as 'command and control', are economically inefficient and rigidly over-prescriptive. [*pg 234] Pollution trading has received strong support from several quarters. Many in academia, industry, and some environmental organizations such as the Environmental Defense Fund, have endorsed pollution trading strategies. The United States government has also grown increasingly reliant on pollution trading to address domestic air pollution problems.

Were you a Trotskyite yourself, or was it just something your parents imposed on you? Rorty: I was just brought up a Trotskyite, the way people are brought up Methodists or Jews or something like that. It was just the faith of the household. Int: Was it the same with Dewey? Rorty: Not really. I mean, Dewey didn't loom as large. My parents weren't particularly interested in philosophy, and I don't think they'd read much Dewey. Int: And Sidney Hook? Rorty: My father and Sidney Hook had left the Communist Party at the same time. And that served as a bond between them. He was a family friend whom I went to see when I decided to go into philosophy. I saw Sidney when I was seventeen or eighteen. He told me: "So, you want to be a philosopher. Publish early and often." You know, a few tips of that general sort and then I saw him over the years and he knew that I disagreed with him about the Vietnam War. That caused a certain edginess. But toward the end of his life, the edginess had disappeared, and we were on reasonably good terms. Int: Were you isolated by your political beliefs?

Sus investigaciones acerca de la constitución del caroteno le permitieron sintetizar la vitamina A. También formó parte del grupo de científicos alemanes que aislaron primero y sintetizaron después la fracción del complejo vitamínico B que se conoce con el nombre de riboflavina.
