Richard Kuhn was born in Vienna on December 3, 1900. His father, Richard Clemens Kuhn, was an engineer and "Hofrat"; his mother, Angelika Rodler, was a teacher in elementary schools. He was educated at the "Gymnasium" (grammar school). He studied chemistry at Vienna University and later at Munich under . He obtained his degree (D.Ph.) in 1922 following his thesis (On the specificity of enzymes).
Kuhn investigated theoretical problems of organic chemistry (stereochemistry of aliphatic and aromatic compounds; syntheses of polyenes and cumulenes; constitution and colour; the acidity of hydrocarbons), as well as extensive fields in biochemistry (carotenoids; flavins; vitamins and enzymes).
For a period of twenty years Kuhn investigated compounds containing double bonds which proved to be of great interest in connection with the study of the chemical nature of the carotenoids. He discovered eight new types of these and was able to analyse their constitution. He also carried out important work on vitamin B and the antidermatitis vitamin B . For his work in this important field Kuhn was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1938.
Kuhn received numerous other honours and awards in recognition of his work; he was awarded honorary degrees of the Technische Hochschule in Munich (1960), the University of Vienna (1960), the University of St. Maria, Brazil (1961). An impressive number of medals and prizes have been presented to him, as well as orders and the highest possible honours, in many countries. Kuhn is also a member of many scientific academies, societies and organizations in all parts of the world. He is the President of the Society of German Chemists, Vice-President of the Max Planck Society and Editor of

Life
Kuhn grew up in Vienna and attended grammar school and high school there. His interest in chemistry surfaced early, however he was universally interested and decided late to study chemistry. Beginning in he attended lectures at the University of Vienna in chemistry. He finished his chemistry studies in Munich and received his doctoral degree in for a scientific work on enzyms. After graduating Kuhn continued his scientic career, first in Munich, then at the ETH Zurich and from onwards at the University of Heidelberg, where he was head of the chemistry department beginning in . In he married Daisy Hartmann and the couple subsequently had two sons and four daughters. edit
Scientific work and Nobel Prize
Kuhn's areas of study included: carotenoids, stereochemistry vitamins , and enzymes . He was the first to isolate a B vitamin. He was subsequently awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in for his work in carotenoids and vitamins, but was unable to accept the award until after

Our research focuses on understanding the biology of viruses that infect humans. Specifically, my lab is interested in viruses that contain a lipid bilayer membrane and contain plus strand RNA as their genetic material. These viruses are grouped in the Togaviridae and Flaviviridae families; some representative members include Sindbis, Ross River and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus for Togaviruses, and yellow fever, dengue, West Nile and hepatitis C virus for the Flaviviruses. Viruses within these two groups pose significant risks to large segments of the population, and methods for controlling infection and disease are few. Our goal is to understand all aspects of their replication cycle at the molecular level by integrating techniques from molecular genetics, biochemistry and structural biology.
