Electrical and computer engineering Professor Herbert Kroemer, one of UCSB's three Nobel laureates, was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, the highest honor awarded by the German government, on Oct. 20. Kroemer is best known for his invention of heterostructured semiconductors, which are used in all computers. He has also pioneered many advances in the field. "I've always, from the beginning, been interested in things that were several generations ahead of what people could do," he said. "Small steps didn't really interest me. I was interested in big steps." The award is given to a German citizen responsible for an outstanding body of work in his or her respective field. German ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger presented the prize in a ceremony, which took place in Los Angeles at Aurora Village, a center for European-American cultural exchanges. "The whole year had been one tremendous experience," Kroemer said. "It changes your life."

The Royal Swedish Academy said the Prize "recognizes information and communication technology as the major force in the transition from an industrial society to an information and knowledge based society." The Prize was awarded for "two major physical inventions": to Jack S. Kilby "for his part in the invention of the integrated circuit" and to Zhores I. Alferov and UCSB's Herbert Kroemer "for developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed and opto-electronics." "What is a semiconductor heterostructure?" Kroemer was asked on the nightly Newshour With Jim Lehrer. This is, unfortunately, not a question for an impromptu response that can be understood by a public television audience. One way to answer the question is to look at the development of Kroemer's thought on semiconductor heterostructures. Kroemer finished studies for his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Gšttingen in 1952 and went to work as the "house theorist" in the semiconductor research group of the telecommunications laboratory of the German Postal Service. There, as long as he gave a weekly two-hour lecture, he could pretty much pursue the questions that interested him.

Credits Science Academy Picks Kroemer By GAIL GALLESSICH Physicist Herbert Kroemer Herbert Kroemer, winner of a Nobel Prize in 2000 for his pioneering work in physics, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the nation's most prestigious scientific organization. Kroemer holds the Donald W. Whittier Chair in Electrical Engineering and is a professor of materials. A member of UCSB's faculty since 1976, he is widely known for developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed and opto-electronics-the pioneering research for which he received the Nobel Prize. This election brings to 22 the number of current UCSB faculty members who have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). At the end of last month, NAS named 72 new members and 18 foreign associates from 11 countries in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Herbert Kroemer, 1928 in Weimar geboren, wurde im Jahre 2000 für seine Verdienste in der Halbleiterforschung mit dem Physik-Nobelpreis ausgezeichnet. Nach seiner Dissertation in Göttingen zu Effekten in Transistoren hatte er 1954 in die USA gewechselt, wo er 1957 eine bahnbrechende Arbeit über einen aus verschiedenen Elementen zusammengesetzten Transistor veröffentlichte. Damit legte er im wesentlichen den Grundstein für die heutige Heterostrukturphysik, einem der zentralen Gebiete der modernen Halbleiterphysik. 1968 erhielt er einen Ruf an die Universität von Colorado in Boulder. Seit 1976 lehrt und forscht Kroemer an der Universität von Kalifornien in Santa Barbara. Zhores Alferov Jack Kilby Herbert Kroemer The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics to Zhores Alferov, director of the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in Saint Petersburg, Russia; Herbert Kroemer of the University of California, Santa Barbara; and Jack Kilby, now retired from Texas Instruments Inc (TI) in Dallas, Texas, "for basic work on information and communication technology."
