Sir Hans Adolf Krebs August 25 November 22 ) was a German medical doctor and biochemist He was born in Hildesheim , Germany, the son of Georg Krebs, also M.D., and his wife Alma. He went to school in Hildesheim and studied medicine at the University of Göttingen from 1918-1923. He gained his Ph.D. at the University of Hamburg in 1925, then studied chemistry in Berlin for one year, where he later became an assistant of Otto Warburg at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology until 1930. He then returned to medical work, which became forbidden under National Socialist rule in 1933. He was invited to Cambridge , where he studied biochemistry . He became professor of biochemistry at the University of Sheffield in 1945. Krebs' area of interest was the intermediary metabolism . He discovered the urea cycle in 1932 and the citric acid cycle in 1937, which is still often called Krebs cycle . He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1953.

This extensive archive comprises the personal and scientific working papers of the distinguished biochemist Sir Hans Adolf Krebs (1900-1981), Nobel prizewinner in 1953 (with Franz Lipmann) for Physiology and Medicine in recognition of his elucidation of the metabolic process known as the tricarboxylic acid cycle or citric acid cycle. The collection was assembled from several sources associated with Krebs at various dates between July 1982 and June 1986, and consists not only of material relating to his work in biochemistry and medicine but also biographical and autobiographical papers, writings on the history and philosophy of science, sociobiology and criminality, speeches, conference papers, publications, lectures and broadcasts, correspondence and photographs.
Nature turned down this paper when it was offered to them and it was published in Enzymologia
In 1954 he was offered and accepted the Whitley Chair of Biochemistry at Oxford University, and his MRC work continued in the Metabolic Research Laboratory in the Radcliffe Infirmary. In 1958 he received a knighthood. Although officially retiring in 1967 he continued to work, funded by the MRC and other grants, until his death in 1981 at the age of 80.

    Beyond the name
Names of medical syndromes fall off our tongues as we use them everyday. But who were the people who gave their names to them? Sammy Radstone looks into a few Down's syndrome: John Langdon Haydon Down (1828-96) John Down was born in Cornwall to an Irish-Cornish family in 1828. His scientific interest began as a child and progressed when he left school at the age of 13 to help his father in the pharmacy business. He moved to London at 18 to work as surgeon's assistant in Whitechapel. Down remained there for only a few months because he found work at the laboratories of the Pharmaceutical Society in Bloomsbury Square, London. Down entered London Hospital Medical School at the age of 25. He excelled as a student and was predicted a brilliant career as a hospital doctor by his teachers. However, he surprised everyone by taking a post at the Earlswood Asylum for Idiots in Surrey in 1858. The next year Down was elected as an assistant doctor to the London Hospital and spent the next decade sharing his time between the two institutions. Down's definitive monograph

German-born British biochemist who received (with Fritz Lipmann) the 1953 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for the discovery in living organisms of the series of chemical reactions known as the tricarboxylic acid cycle (also called the citric acid cycle, or Krebs cycle) - the basic system for the essential pathway of oxidation process within the cell. These reactions involve the conversion - in the presence of oxygenof substances that are formed by the breakdown of sugars, fats, and protein components to carbon dioxide, water, and energy-rich compounds. The Krebs cycle explains two simultaneous processes: the degradation reactions which yield energy, and the building-up processes which use up energy.

one of the most colourful figures of the early years of U.S. aviation, who set many records . Between 15-22 Jul 1933, the first round-the-world solo flight (15,596 miles) was completed by Wiley Post, in his single-engine Lockheed Vega 5B aircraft "Winnie Mae," in 7 days 18-hr 49-min. He had made an accompanied flight around the world in 1931. Wiley Post had made his first solo flight in 1926, the year he got his flying license, signed by Orville Wright, despite wearing a patch over his left eye, lost in an oilfield accident. Post invented the first pressurized suit to wear when he flew around the world. Another credit was his research into the jet streams.
