n. A series of enzymatic reactions in aerobic organisms involving oxidative metabolism of acetyl units and producing high-energy phosphate compounds, which serve as the main source of cellular energy. Also called citric acid cycle tricarboxylic acid cycle [After Sir Hans Adolf KREBS
Encyclopedia
Krebs cycle, series of chemical reactions carried out in the living cell; in most higher animals, including humans, it is essential for the oxidative metabolism of glucose and other simple sugars. The breakdown of glucose to carbon dioxide and water is a complex set of chemical interconversions called carbohydrate catabolism , and the Krebs cycle is the second of three major stages in the process, occurring between glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation . This cycle, also known as the citric acid cycle, was named in recognition of the German chemist Hans Krebs, whose research into the cellular utilization of glucose contributed greatly to the modern understanding of this aspect of metabolism. The name citric acid cycle is derived from the first product generated by the sequence of conversions, i.e., citric acid . The reactions are seen to comprise a cycle inasmuch as citric acid is both the first product and the final reactant, being regenerated at the conclusion of one complete set of chemical rearrangements. Citric acid is a so-called tricarboxylic acid, containing three carboxyl groups (COOH). Hence the Krebs cycle is sometimes referred to as the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. The Krebs cycle begins with the condensation of one molecule of a compound called oxaloacetic acid and one molecule of acetyl CoA (a derivative of coenzyme A; see

Germany to England
Because of his Jewish heritage he was barred from practicing medicine in Germany and he emigrated to England in 1933. He was invited to Cambridge , where he worked in the biochemistry department under Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins (1861-1947). Hans became professor of biochemistry at the University of Sheffield in 1945. edit

    Administrative/Biographical History
This extensive archive comprises the personal and scientific working papers of the distinguished biochemist Sir Hans Adolf Krebs (1900-1981), Nobel prizewinner in 1953 (with Franz Lipmann) for Physiology and Medicine in recognition of his elucidation of the metabolic process known as the tricarboxylic acid cycle or citric acid cycle. The collection was assembled from several sources associated with Krebs at various dates between July 1982 and June 1986, and consists not only of material relating to his work in biochemistry and medicine but also biographical and autobiographical papers, writings on the history and philosophy of science, sociobiology and criminality, speeches, conference papers, publications, lectures and broadcasts, correspondence and photographs. Nature turned down this paper when it was offered to them and it was published in Enzymologia ). During the war years he worked on nationally important research relating to diet and nutrition, particularly the role of vitamins, as a member of Sheffield's Sorby Institute. In 1945 the Medical Research Council set up a Unit for Research in Cell Metabolism at Sheffield, as head of which Krebs was given Professorial status, and which remained in being under his leadership until his retirement in 1967, though transferring with Krebs and most of his research team to Oxford in 1954. The Sheffield period saw the award to Krebs of two major honours: Fellowship of the Royal Society in 1947, and the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine (jointly with Franz Lipmann) in 1953. Many other honours and awards followed during the rest of his career.
