The National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution and the Deutsches Museum collaborated in June 2000 to conduct video interviews with thirty-three Nobel Laureates. Interviews were conducted in Lindau, Germany, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere in the United States. The video documentation subsequently formed the core of the Nobel Voices Video History Project and the exhibition Nobel Voices: Celebrating 100 Years of the Nobel Prize . The interviewees were asked about their motivations, visions for the future, and opinions on the nature of creativity and innovation. In the interviews, the laureates speak about their passion for their work, their childhood inspirations, the spirit of discovery, and the personal meaning of the Nobel Prize.

San Diego's Walter Kohn
wins Nobel for chemistry San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage, Nov. 6, 1998:
By Donald H. Harrison
San Diego, CA (special) Dr. Walter Kohn, a former member of San Diego's Jewish community, was awarded this year's Nobel Prize in chemistry for work he did at UCSD to devise a mathematical formula to describe the relationships of atoms within complex molecules. The award showed how interrelated scientific disciplines have become: Kohn was a founding faculty member of UCSD's physics department. The professor transferred to UC-Santa Barbara in 1975, where he was associated with the Institute for International Theoretical Physics until his retirement five years ago. He is 75. His daughter, Ingrid Kohn, a licensed social worker with Jewish Family Service here in San Diego County, said there is a bittersweet aspect to her father's notification on Oct. 13 won the Nobel Prize. Had he not been part of the Kindertransport of children who were moved from Germany and Austria to England before the outbreak of World War II, he likely would have been murdered with the other Six Million victims of the nazi Holocaust.

Walter Kohn: Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1998 C. K. Majumdar Professor Walter Kohn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1998 jointly with Prof. J. Pople. Kohn and Pople were not professional chemists, but their researches led to important breakthroughs in chemical calculations. Walter Kohn was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1923. His family left Austria before World War II and he finished his school education in England. He obtained BA and MA from Toronto University in Canada. He joined Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, as a Junior Fellow and worked with the famous physicist Julian Schwinger for his Ph D in the properties of some elementary particles (Schwinger himself got the Nobel Prize in 1965 for his work in quantum electrodynamics). and others. A very fruitful collaboration between Kohn and Luttinger started at this time; they looked at the quantum transport problem through the quantum density matrix, and Kohn returned to the transport problem later with some students like Woll and Green. The failure of the simple band theory in distinguishing insulators and conductors was known, and he tried to develop a theory of the insulating state with his first student of Indian origin, Ambegaokar. The anomalous diagrams require, in statistical mechanical terms, the shift of the chemical potential from its non-interacting value to the correct value for the interacting system. In 1960, Kohn moved to La Jolla in the newly established campus of the University of California there.

Wednesday, January 17, 2001 Editor's Note - In 1998, physics Professor Walter Kohn won the first Nobel Prize for a professor at UCSB. This article, the second in a four-part series, looks at Kohn's life and his contributions, both to the field of chemistry and to the school where he has been a professor for the last 22 years. From his escape of Nazi-controlled Austria, to the transformation of two university physics departments, to a Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1998, UCSB physics Professor Walter Kohn has made his mark on the world. His impact rubbed off on his colleagues as well - when physics Professor Alan Heeger announced his own Nobel Prize last October, he wore a bolero tie like the one Kohn always wears. Kohn's Nobel Prize, which was the first won by a professor at UCSB, reflected his skill as a researcher, but also on the school and the institutions whose reputations he helped build. "It was in some sense an affirmation of something which we knew, that he was an outstanding scientist, that the department was a first-class department," Heeger said. "It was a great place to be."

From his escape of Nazi-controlled Austria, to the transformation of two university physics departments, to a Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1998, UCSB physics Professor Walter Kohn has made his mark on the world.

1923-1939: Childhood in Austria 1940-1979: From Farmer to Physicist When Kohn first arrived in England in 1939, he wanted to pursue a lifestyle as a farmer since jobs for intellectuals were rare. A year later, however, after an adopted family encouraged him to pursue more schooling, he became interested in physics and math. Kohn was finally sent to Canada where, as a refugee, he worked as a lumberjack and used his 20 cents a day to support a habit of buying chemistry and math textbooks. Though encouraged and wanting to study chemistry, his German heritage prevented Kohn from entering a chemistry lab. He studied math for two years at the University of Toronto instead.

A physics professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Kohn was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize for his leading role in the development of density-functional theory, which has revolutionized scientists’ approach to the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solid materials in physics, chemistry and materials science. With the density-functional theory and the power of supercomputers, scientists can more easily "see" into the atomic structure of matter. Density-functional theory is a reformulation of quantum mechanics that makes possible the efficient calculation of electronic properties in many electron systems. The density-functional theory carries importance in a broad range of properties in condensed matter physics and quantum chemistry. An author of more than 200 scientific articles and reviews, he has made major contributions to the physics of semiconductors, superconductivity and surface physics.
