Lasker Awards and the Nobel
The Lasker Medical Science Awards in basic research, clinical research, special achievement and public service, which have been bestowed since 1945, provide a chronicle of the progress of biomedical research over the last half-century. The Lasker Foundation is proud that many of the amazing discoveries and achievements of Lasker Award winners are recognized, in addition, by the prestigious Nobel Prize. As of 2004, sixty-eight Lasker winners have gone on to win the Nobel. The following statistics are of interest:
  • 48% of the Basic Lasker Winners go on to win the Nobel

55. Chapter 3: KEY FACTORS | International Benchmarking Of US Immunology Research: P
georges jf Kohler, Germany, Switzerland, . Niels K. Jerne, Denmark, Switzerland, -. 1987, Susumu Tonegawa, Japan, Switzerland/ United States, United States
http://books.nap.edu/html/bench_immun/ch3.html
KEY FACTORS The panel identified five key factors that influence the international leadership status of US immunology research. These factors are
  • Funding
  • Human Resources
  • Infrastructure
  • Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Firms
  • Clinical Trials
Each is assessed in more depth below relative to how the United States compares to other countries.
3.1 Funding
Both the US and foreign members of the panel generally agreed that the structure and financial-support mechanisms of the major research institutions in the United States and the structure and mechanisms for provision of research-grant support by government and private granting agencies constitutes a major factor in the success of the US scientific enterprise in immunology and in almost every field of biomedical research. In contrast, in Europe, Japan, Australia, and several other countries, the central government supports research institutions, universities, and medical schools and allocates research-grant support for specific research projects of specific people. Government regulation of hiring, personnel practices, and many other aspects of operating research laboratories are therefore centrally controlled and do not permit the diversity that is characteristic of the US scientific enterprise. In addition to the diversity of US institutional organization and support, many research programs throughout the United States have enjoyed a greater degree of support from pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms than is true in Europe.

http://www.dsch.units.it/~benedetti/antibody_catalysis.htm
Antibody Catalysis "If complementarity between the active site and the transition state contributes significantly to enzymatic catalysis, it should be possible to synthesize an enzyme by constructing such an active site. One way to do this is to prepare an antibody to a haptenic group which resembles the transition state of a given reaction. The combining sites of such antibodies should be complementary to the transition state and should cause an acceleration by forcing bound substrates to resemble the transition state." William p. Jencks, Catalysis in Chemistry and Enzymology , 1969, p.288 Catalytic antibodies are currently the most successfull enzyme mimics.a They are proteins raised by the immune system against transition state analogues of the reaction of interest. An antibody is a large, homodimeric protein, produced by the lymph cells of the immune system. Each antibody molecule bears two identical binding sites, consisting of six b-loops. Antibodies recognize their antigens with high affinity and extreme selectivity. In 1940 Linus Pauling suggested the idea that enzyme catalysis is due to a selective recognition of the transition state. In the same year he published also the first paper on the structure of an antibody, and he discussed first the mechanism of recognition in immunocomplexes.

Encyclopedia Milstein, C©sar, 1927–2002, Anglo-Argentine immunologist, Ph.D. Cambridge Univ., 1960. He worked (1961–63) at the National Institute of Microbiology, Buenos Aires, but following a military coup he resigned and returned to Cambridge, where he joined the staff of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, serving as its deputy director from 1988 to 1995, when he retired. In 1975, with Georges K¶hler , he developed the hybridoma technique for producing monoclonal antibodies , pure, mass-produced antibodies that recognize only one antigen (see immunity ). Their method for monoclonal antibody production has since been adopted universally, and such antibodies are used in laboratory research, in medical diagnostics, and in medical treatments to neutralize bacterial toxins. In 1984, Milstein (with K¶hler and Niels K. Jerne ) shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
