Estudió en Berna, París, Berlín y Londres. De 1872 a 1911 fue profesor de cirugía de la Universidad de Berna y director de su clínica. Descubrió un método para reducir la luxación del hombro, introdujo nuevas técnicas en las operaciones de hernia y cáncer de estómago e ideó un medio para el trasplante del tiroides. En 1878 practicó con éxito la primera extirpación del bocio. Como vivía en una de las zonas más bociógenas del mundo, tuvo ocasión de repetir esta difícil intervención más de 2000 veces. En 1912 preparó el coaguleno esterilizado que, inyectado, aumenta la coagulación de la sangre y sirve para prevenir y tratar hemorragias internas. Considerado como el mejor cirujano de su época, fue elegido presidente del Primer Congreso Internacional de Cirugía (1905) y galardonado con el premio Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina en 1909. Dictionary FastHealth Email This! n Swiss surgeon. Kocher spent virtually all of his career at the university surgical clinic at Bern. He made important contributions to the understanding of the physiology and pathology of the thyroid and the treatment of goiter occurring with and without hyperthyroidism. In 1876 he performed the first excision of the thyroid gland for the treatment of goiter; he published a description of his surgical procedure in 1878. Later, in 1883, he reported his discovery of a characteristic cretinoid pattern in patients after total excision of the thyroid gland. In 1878 he performed a successful drainage of a gallbladder, utilizing the forceps that have since become associated with his name. He also published in 1892 a textbook of operative surgery that remained a standard reference for many years. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1909. EDUCATIONAL Theodor Kocher Archiv , Vol. II, with which Billroth was especially pleased; and by anatomical investigations and studies of pathological anatomy he discovered a new method for the reduction of dislocations of the shoulder, which was soon accepted and used as the simplest and surest method of rectifying not only recent, but also old dislocations. When Kocher began his surgical activities the transition from the septic to the antiseptic treatment of wounds had been completed and Kocher worked for the latter with all his energies because of its great importance. Then arose a series of works on the antiseptic treatment of wounds with weak chlorine solutions, the Listerian treatment of ovariotomies (1875), the preparation of antiseptic catgut and the simplest method of obtaining healing of wounds without drainage tubes, on conditions governing healing by first intention, and on Lister's wound dressings. The surgical clinic in Berne was for a long time the centre of attraction for medical men who favoured the antiseptic treatment of wounds and wished to follow it. Later Kocher was one of the first to go over to pure asepsis about which he had the best opportunities to learn through his collaboration with Tavel, whose bacteriological studies on infective processes he sought to advance. From this work proceeded the second edition of (Lectures on surgical infectious diseases ) by Kocher and Tavel, Basel, 1892, and Jena, 1900.
