Koch, Robert
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Koch, Robert (1843-1910), German scientist and Nobel laureate, who founded modern medical bacteriology, isolated several disease-causing bacteria, including those of tuberculosis, and discovered the animal vectors of a number of major diseases. Born in Klausthal-Zellerfeld, on December 11, 1843, Koch enrolled at the University of G¶ttingen in 1862, where he studied botany, physics, and mathematics and began his lifelong medical career. After a brief tenure at the Hamburg General Hospital and at an institute for retarded children, he started private practice. His professional activities did not deter him from developing outside interests in archaeology, anthropology, occupational diseases such as lead poisoning, and the newly emerging field of bacteriology. Koch's first major breakthrough in bacteriology occurred in the 1870s, when he demonstrated that the infectious disease

Klausthal-Zellerfeld, Hanover, Germany, December 11, 1843, d. Baden-Baden, Germany, May 27, 1910] A founder of the science of bacteriology, Koch devised a procedure in 1876 to demonstrate that the bacterium Bacillus anthracis causes anthrax, a disease of animals that can also be transmitted to humans. It was the first time that a particular bacterium was shown to be the cause of a particular disease. Koch also discovered the bacteria that cause tuberculosis ( Mycobacterium tuberculosis ) and cholera ( Vibrio cholerae ). He developed improved methods for staining bacteria and introduced the use of gelatin and, later, agar as growing media for bacterial colonies. Dictionary Koch k´k, k´ KH Robert

Robert Koch was born in Klausthal-Zellerfield, Germany on December 11, 1843. He studied at the University of Guttingen. After graduation be worked at Hamburg General Hospital before beginning a private practice. Later in his career he was appointed as an advisor to the Imperial Department of Health in Berlin, Germany. In 1870 Koch demonstrated that Bacillus anthrax spores cause the infection in mice. He was the first to isolate the bacteria that cause disease. In addition to his work with anthrax, he also studied tuberculosis. He isolate the bacillus that causes tuberculosis in 1881.During the remainder of his career, Koch studied tuberculosis and cholera. He found that cholera was transmitted from one person to another through contaminated water. Late in his career he also studied diseases caused by insect vectors. For his contributions to the germ theory of disease, Koch is often thought of as being the "father of bacteriology". For his work, Koch was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1905. He died at Baden-Baden, Germany on May 27, 1910. References Asimov, I. (1964).

Robert Koch Page Content Introduction Robert Koch is generally considered to be one of the two founders of modern bacteriology. The other is, of course, Louis Pasteur. Robert Koch 1843 - 1910 Born on 11 December 1843, in Klausthal Germany, Koch was one of thirteen children. His father was a mining official. He grew up to be an avid chess player, an admirer of Johann Goethe and above all a brilliant scientific investigator. He obtained a medical degree from the University of Gottingen, in 1866, after studying firstly natural science and then medicine. One of Koch's teachers at the university was the German pathologist Friedrich Henle who has had a huge influence on the development of histology. Another teacher was the chemist first to synthesise an organic compound (urea) from an inorganic substance in 1828, Friedrich Wohler. After graduation Koch became a physician in various provincial towns and a surgeon during the 1870-72 Franco-Prussian war. The French parasitologist Casimir-Joseph Davaine inspired by the work of the French microbiologist Louis Pasteur had showed, in 1863, that anthrax in sheep was due to the presence of rod-like bodies in the blood. However, the natural history of the disease was not complete. This required the painstaking observational work of Koch.

Robert Koch
Robert Koch was born in 1843. Koch worked on anthrax and tuberculosis (TB) and he further developed the work of Louis Pasteur . Koch’s fame, alongside that of Alexander Fleming Edward Jenner Joseph Lister and Pasteur himself, is firmly cemented in medical history Koch came from a poor mining family and it took him a lot of determination to get a university place where he first studied mathematics and natural science and then studied medicine. Pasteur was convinced that microbes caused diseases in humans but his work on cholera had failed. He was never able to directly link one microbe with a disease. Koch succeeded in doing this. Koch was a doctor and he had a detailed knowledge of the human body – something that Pasteur, as a research scientist – lacked. He was also skilled in experiments, the result of his work in natural sciences. Qualities that also proved to be important were his ability to work for long periods of time and his patience. However, Koch was also difficult to work with and could not tolerate anyone telling him that his theories were wrong. In 1872, Koch became district medical officer for a rural area near Berlin. He started to experiment with microbes in a small laboratory he had built for himself in his surgery.
