He is best known for the children's story The Jungle Book ), the Indian spy novel Kim ), the poems " Gunga Din ), and his many short stories He was also an outspoken defender of Western imperialism , coined the phrase " The White Man's Burden " and embodied what that implied in the hymnlike strophes of "Recessional: a Victorian Ode" (1897) with its refrain "Lest we forget— lest we forget." The height of his popularity was the first decade of the 20th century : in he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature , still its youngest-ever recipient to date, and in he shared the Gothenburg Prize for Poetry with William Butler Yeats . Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born in Bombay, but educated in England at the United Services College, Westward Ho, Bideford. In 1882 he returned to India, where he worked for Anglo-Indian newspapers. His literary career began with Departmental Ditties (1886), but subsequently he became chiefly known as a writer of short stories. A prolific writer, he achieved fame quickly. Kipling was the poet of the British Empire and its yeoman, the common soldier, whom he glorified in many of his works, in particular Plain Tales from the Hills (1888) and Soldiers Three (1888), collections of short stories with roughly and affectionately drawn soldier portraits. His Barrack Room Ballads (1892) were written for, as much as about, the common soldier. In 1894 appeared his Jungle Book , which became a children's classic all over the world. Kim (1901), the story of Kimball O'Hara and his adventures in the Himalayas, is perhaps his most felicitous work. Other works include The Second Jungle Book The Seven Seas Captains Courageous The Day's Work Stalky and Co.

TOMLINSON
by
Rudyard Kipling
Now Tomlinson gave up the ghost at his house in Berkeley Square,
And a Spirit came to his bedside and gripped him by the hair—
A Spirit gripped him by the hair and carried him far away,
Till he heard as the roar of a rain-fed ford the roar of the Milky Way:
Till he heard the roar of the Milky Way die down and drone and cease,
And they came to the Gate within the Wall where Peter holds the keys.
"Stand up, stand up now, Tomlinson, and answer loud and high
"The good that ye did for the sake of men or ever ye came to die—
"The good that ye did for the sake of men on the little Earth so lone!"
And the naked soul of Tomlinson grew white as the rain-washed bone.
"O I have a friend on Earth," he said, "that was my priest and guide, "And well would he answer all for me if he were at my side." —"For that ye strove in neighbour-love it shall be written fair, "But now ye wait at Heaven's Gate and not in Berkeley Square: "Though we called your friend from his bed this night, he could not speak for you, "For the race is run by one and one and never by two and two."

Biografie van de Britse schrijver en dichter. Hij schreef onder andere Het Jungle Book .
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudyard_Kipling
Rudyard Kipling
Joseph Rudyard Kipling 30 december Bombay India 18 januari ...

Kipling, Rudyard
30 December 1865 - 18 January 1936
Best known today as (1) the literary champion of late Victorian imperialism and (2) early content provider for Disney animation studios (that is, author of children's stories such as The Jungle Book and Just-So Stories , among others), Kipling also had some interest in the supernatural. Points one and two pretty much mitigate against him being taken very seriously these days, which is a shame given the craftsmanship of his work, although some people still regard his work (think especially Plain Tales from the Hills ) and Kim ) as some of the more insightful, from a European perspective and for its time, regarding the Indian subcontinent and its inhabitants. Kipling's ghostly tales evince a powerful interest in the psychological, and their subtlety and indirection can be quite impressive. It's not Henry James, but it's closer than you might think, and a heck of a lot more fun....

British writer whose major works, including the short story “The Man Who Would Be King” (1889), a collection of children's stories, The Jungle Book (1894), and the novel Kim (1901), are set in British-occupied India. He won the 1907 Nobel Prize for literature. Encyclopedia Kipling, Rudyard, 1865–1936, English author, b. Bombay, India. Educated in England, Kipling returned to India in 1882 and worked as an editor on a Lahore paper. His early poems were collected in Departmental Ditties Barrack-Room Ballads (1892), and other volumes. His first short stories of Anglo-Indian life appeared in Plain Tales from the Hills (1888) and Soldiers Three (1888). In 1889 he returned to London, where his novel The Light That Failed (1890) appeared. Kipling's masterful stories and poems interpreted India in all its heat, strife, and ennui. His romantic imperialism and his characterization of the true Englishman as brave, conscientious, and self-reliant did much to enhance his popularity. These views are reflected in such well-known poems as “The White Man's Burden,” “Loot,” “Mandalay,” “Gunga Din,” and
