Dateline: October 13, 2000 The mere existence of the Nobel Peace Prize is refreshing on a morning like this. The worst violence in a generation is sweeping the West Bank and Gaza. As many as 17 American sailors are dead in a terrorist attack in a Yemeni port. Yet the hope of peace somewhere in the world is still alive.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2000
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2000 to Kim Dae-jung for his work for democracy and human rights in South Korea and in East Asia in general, and for peace and reconciliation with North Korea in particular.
In the course of South Korea's decades of authoritarian rule, despite repeated threats on his life and long periods in exile, Kim Dae-jung gradually emerged as his country's leading spokesman for democracy. His election in 1997 as the republic's president marked South Korea's definitive entry among the world's democracies. As president, Kim Dae-jung has sought to consolidate democratic government and to promote internal reconciliation within South Korea.
With great moral strength, Kim Dae-jung has stood out in East Asia as a leading defender of universal human rights against attempts to limit the relevance of those rights in Asia. His commitment in favour of democracy in Burma and against repression in East Timor has been considerable.
Through his ", Kim Dae-jung has attempted to overcome more than fifty years of war and hostility between North and South Korea. His visit to North Korea gave impetus to a process which has reduced tension between the two countries. There may now be hope that the cold war will also come to an end in Korea. Kim Dae-jung has worked for South Korea's reconciliation with other neighbouring countries, especially Japan.

Address by President Kim Dae-jung of the Republic of Korea at a Joint Meeting of the United States Congress
June 10, 1998, Washington, D. C.
Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, distinguished members of the Senate and House, ladies and gentlemen. A rare succession of world leaders has been accorded the honor of speaking from this lofty podium. But today, I am the first to have been twice snatched from death by the decisive actions of your nation. You first saved my life in 1973, when I was kidnapped and nearly murdered by the military regime, and again in 1980, when a dictatorship sentenced me to death. I escaped five attempts on my life; one by Communists; the other four by military dictators. Living 40 years of my life under surveillance, I spent six years in prison and more than 10 years in exile or under house arrest. At that moment, an airplane flew over the vessel and stopped my abductors. Later, we learned the plane had intervened because of information from the United States.

University of Cambridge to establish Kim Dae-Jung Centre for Korean Studies 26 June 2000 The University of Cambridge is pleased to announce that President Kim Dae-Jung of South Korea has graciously consented to the use of his name for its proposed Centre for Korean Studies. The Kim Dae-Jung Centre will be an integral part of the University's newly-established East Asia Institute, which already has within it Centres for Chinese and Japanese studies and which provides a focus point for all teaching and research on East Asia in the University. Cambridge sees the study of contemporary Korea, as well as Korean language and culture, as a vital element in promoting the understanding of the history and dynamics of the East Asia region, and the University is delighted to be able to pay tribute to President Kim in this way. Kim Dae-Jung has devoted the major part of his life fighting for the establishment of democracy in Korea, surviving kidnap, imprisonment and court martial. During 1993 the President spent the best part of a year in Cambridge, at Clare Hall, planning not only a return to politics but also how best to achieve the eventual unification of his country. In this the third year of his Presidency, his vision is beginning to bear fruit and the time is right to honour Kim Dae-Jung for his achievements. An initial activity, undertaken as a precursor to the establishment of the Centre, will be the inauguration of a series of visiting fellowships for eminent Koreans, supported by BAE Systems, whose company headquarters is at Farnborough, UK.

Wiretapping scandal 'unfair' to Kim Dae-jung: ruling floor leader
Chung Sye-kyun

By Byun Duk-kun
SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Yonhap) The floor leader of South Korea's ruling Uri Party claimed Wednesday that the news coverage of wiretapping by the country's spy agency seems generally "unfair to former President Kim Dae-jung," despite the fact that he is the very person who ended the decades-long illegal activity.
"The media is only stressing that there was illegal bugging under the Kim Dae-jung administration," Rep. Chung Sye-kyun said in an interview with the Yonhap News Agency. "I think this is unfair because it was former President Kim Dae-jung who ended the (spy agency's) illegal wiretapping that continued since the late President Park Chung-hee was in office.".
A Nobel Peace Prize laureate, the former president came under public criticism last week when the National Intelligence Service (NIS) admitted that it had maintained a clandestine eavesdropping unit until as late as March 2002, about one year before Kim's five-year presidential term expired.
Chung claimed the former president was completely unaware of wiretapping under his administration because it was committed by some officials who continued to resort to what he said was the easiest way to gather information despite Kim's direct order to halt the illegal practice.

South Korean President Kim Dae-jung Interviewed by People's Daily ROK President Kim Dae-jung met with Xu Zhongtian, president of and the China Newspaper Association, and accepted an exclusive interview by journalist in his presidential residence Cheong Wa Dae on June 3. Since ROK and China established diplomatic ties 10 years ago the bilateral relations have been developing rapidly, Kim stressed, adding that cooperation should be furthered to achieve a win-win deal. This year marks the 10th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, and Kim firstly asked Xu to convey his greetings to President Jiang Zemin and other Chinese leaders. Kim expressed his satisfaction over the rapid development of ROK-China bilateral ties which, he recalled, firstly focused on trade and then fixed at "cooperative partnership facing the 21st century" when he visited China and met President Jiang in 1998. Then, when premier Zhu visited ROK in 2000, the two sides agreed to push forward the partnership to a new stage of overall cooperation. Now cooperation relations are developing in the fields of politics, economy, culture, and tourism.

President Kim Dae-jung: I would like to give my presentation. First, on behalf of the Korean people, I would like to warmly welcome President Bush and thank him for taking time out of the war against terrorism to visit our country. This visit is the first by President Bush since his inauguration, and it is also the first by an American President in the 21st century. It is for this reason that this visit will lay the foundation for future progress in Korean-U.S. relations in this century. During today's meeting, President Bush and I recognized that the Korea-U.S. alliance is indispensable not only for stability on the Korean Peninsula, but also in Northeast Asia as a whole. Furthermore, President Bush and I expressed satisfaction that the bilateral alliance is not limited to cooperation in security matters, but that the comprehensive partnership has expanded and developed to all areas, including political, economic and diplomatic arenas. President Bush and I exchanged views about the war against terrorism and future course of action. I praised President Bush for the success in the war against terrorism under his outstanding leadership, and indicated that Korea as an ally would do its utmost to cooperate and provide full support.
