Citing URL - http://www.esi-topics.com/bose/interviews/WolfgangKetterle.html n this interview, Special Topics correspondent Gary Taubes talks with Wolfgang Ketterle about his highly cited work in the field of Bose-Einstein condensates. According to our analysis of this field over the past decade, Dr. Ketterle is the most-cited scientist, with 74 papers cited a total of 5,824 times—six of these papers appear in our listing of the top 20 papers. His most-cited paper, "Bose-Einstein condensation in a gas of sodium atoms," ( Phys. Rev. Lett. 75[22]: 3969-73, 27 November 1995), ranks at #2 on our list. In the ISI Essential Science Indicators Web product, Dr. Ketterle’s work can be found in the field of Physics. Dr. Ketterle was one of the Nobel Prize winners in Physics in 2001, along with Eric Cornell and Carl Wieman. Dr. Ketterle is the John D. MacArthur Professor of Physics at MIT, where he is one of the principal investigators in the Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics Group in the Research Laboratory of Electronics.

They are produced by cooling a dilute atomic gas to the lowest temperatures ever achieved. Professor Wolfgang Ketterle Professor Ketterle Nobel Prize in Physics, 2001 Department of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Introduction Professor Wolfgang Ketterle, along with Eric Cornell and Carl Wieman, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in December 2001. In January 2002, he visited Ireland to honour an invitation issued before the announcement of the Nobel Award, as the guest of the Institute of Physics, and spoke at Dublin City University, the University of Limerick and Queen's University Belfast. His visit to Ireland was his first speaking trip since the Nobel award, and a great deal of interest and excitement surrounded his time in Ireland. top Nobel Award Professor Ketterle and two of his colleagues were awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering a new state of matter the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the three scientists are recognized "for the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates." top Understanding Bose-Einstein Condensates According to the Nobel Award press material, a laser beam differs from the light from an ordinary light bulb in several ways. In the laser the light particles all have the same energy and oscillate together. To cause matter also to behave in this controlled way has long been a challenge for researchers.

2001 Nobel laureate Wolfgang Ketterle, an investigator in the Fundamental Physics program, reviewed in his Nobel lecture how techniques were developed for creating and studying the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) state of clouds of atoms. Saturday, 24 January 1998. This workshop is being arranged to exploit the presence of Paul Julienne and Wolfgang Ketterle in Copenhagen. The aim of the workshop is to discuss current results and prospects for future research, both experimental and theoretical. There will be presentations by Paul Julienne, who will talk on prospects in the physics of cold atomic gases, and by Wolfgang Ketterle, who will describe recent experimental work and perspectives for future research. Lots of time will be available for discussion. After the workshop session there will be a dinner at a restaurant in the city. Wolfgang Ketterle, Nobel Laureate
The German physicist Wolfgang Ketterle is a star at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. He made the leap from assistent to full professor in just four years, where ten years are more usual. In 2001 he was awarded a Nobel Prize for constructing a Bose-Einstein-Condensator.
When the temperature of matter approaches absolute zero individual atoms gather together and form a type of super atom. That behaviour was predicted by Einstein. Ketterle was able to create the phenomenon in the laboratory, causing a scientific sensation. Now Ketterle wants to use the Bose-Einstein-Condensator to construct a nuclear laser. His dramatic rise to prominence has made an impression on the scientific community here in Germany. The Max-Planck Institute offered him a directorship. But the 48 year old chose to stay in the US, partly for private, partly for professional reasons. He says the advantages of the MIT are more flexibility, less burocracy and stronger international connections. Send Print The report as video on demand
