The Official Web Site of the Nobel Foundation View the Lectures " When Atoms Behave as Waves: Bose-Einstein Condensation and the Atom Laser " ( Stockholm University, Sweden, December 8, 2001 The MIT Department of Physics Colloquium presents the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics Lecture: " Bose-Einstein Condensates: the Coldest Matter in the Universe Research Interests Professor Ketterle's research is in atomic physics and laser spectroscopy, particularly in the area of laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms with the goal of exploring new aspects of ultracold atomic matter. Since the discovery of gaseous Bose-Einstein condensation, large samples of ultracold atoms at nanokelvin temperatures are available. His research group uses such samples for various directions of research. Bose-Einstein condensates are a new quantum fluid. The interactions among the atoms make them an intriguing novel many-body system. Aspects of interest are sound, superfluidity, and properties of miscible and immiscible multi-component condensates. These topics are interdisciplinary with condensed matter physics.

Rapid progress is being made in the study of quantum effects in atomic systems. Due largely to the development of laser cooling during the years 1980-1990 the 1990's have witnessed several breakthroughs: Bose Einstein condensation, the production of "Schrödinger cat states", and the beginning of the study of the propagation of atomic de Broglie waves in complex media which exhibit chaos, localization etc. This school is intended to bring together several leading researchers in these areas to give a series of lecture courses aimed at advanced doctoral and post-doctoral students in order to familiarize them with the frontiers of this research.

Laserový svazek se v mnoha ohledech liší od svìtla obyèejné žárovky. V laseru všechny èástice svìtla mají stejnou energii a spoleènì oscilují. Pøíprava látky, která by se chovala také tímto øízeným zpùsobem, byla dlouhou dobu výzvou pro mnoho výzkumníkù. Letošní laureáti Nobelovy ceny byli úspìšní – pøimìli atomy „zpívat unisono“ – objevili nový stav látky, Bose-Einsteinùv kondenzát (BEC). V roce 1924 indický fyzik Bose provedl zajímavé teoretické výpoèty týkající se èástic svìtla. Poslal své výsledky Einsteinovi, který rozšíøil teorii na urèité typy atomù. Einstein pøedpovìdìl, že pokud plyn takových atomù je ochlazen na velice nízkou teplotu, všechny atomy náhle obsadí nejnižší energetický stav. Proces je podobný procesu vytváøení kapek kapaliny z plynu, odtud tedy název kondenzace. Sedmdesát let pøešlo, než letošní laureáti Nobelovy ceny dosáhli tohoto extrémního stavu hmoty v roce 1995. Cornell a Wieman vytvoøili èistý kondenzát z asi 2 000 atomù rubidia za teploty 20 nK (nanokelvin), tj. 0,000 000 02 stupòù nad absolutní nulou.

Wolfgang Ketterle wurde am 21. Oktober 1957 als zweites von drei Kindern geboren und wuchs in Eppelheim auf. Nach dem Abitur am Bunsengymnasium in Heidelberg begann er mit dem Physikstudium an der Ruprecht-Karls-Universit¤t Heidelberg , nach dem Vordiplom wechselte er an die Technische Universit¤t M¼nchen . Er schlug die Richtung der Theoretischen Physik ein und diplomierte ¼ber die Spin -Relaxation von ungeordneteten Materialien, anschlieŸend wechselte er an das Max-Planck-Institut f¼r Quantenoptik in Garching , und die Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit¤t in M¼nchen zu Herbert Walther und promovierte mit dem Thema Spektroskopie am Heliumhydrid und am dreiatomigen Wasserstoff-Molek¼l Nach seiner Garchinger Zeit wechselte Ketterle wieder nach Heidelberg, um am Lehrstuhl von J¼rgen Wolfrum Untersuchungen an Verbrennungsmotoren durchzuf¼hren. wechselte er erneut sein Arbeitsgebiet und ¼bersiedelte nach Amerika, um in der Gruppe von
