In Memoriam:
Harriet P. Henry
T hose of us who have been privileged to chair the board of the Maine Humanities Council have sometimes likened our task to herding cats, both because of the energy and creativity of the staff and board, and because the humanities themselves include so much of human thought and experience.
No one herded cats or represented the humanities better than Harriet Henry, who was an important role model for me and so many others in Maine. As I finish my time as chair and think about coming to the end of my service on the board, I am reminded again of the power of Harriet’s leadership at a moment when the future of the National Endowment for the Humanities and of the Council seemed dim. Harriet helped the Council to weather that storm and find a new direction, which left the Council far stronger and made my own task much easier. I miss her southern charm and determination, her commitment to quality and sense of humor, her vision for how the humanities could make Maine a better place to live and work and the irreverent asides she would sometimes whisper at meetings if I could manage to sit next to her. Just as the MHC is stronger for her leadership, I have learned a great deal from knowing her.
Marli F. Weiner, MHC Board Chair (2002-2004)

A ustralian Literary References, or works about Australian Writers and Writing, are listed on this page. We@OzLit should like to emphasise that if a work is listed here it does not necessarily mean that it is applicable to your needs – it would be up to you to assess the suitability of the work. Literary magazines and Newspapers are often a good source for study. The best source of research is the Aust.Lit. CD which is available in many of the larger libraries (especially at Universities). You can also try telnetting into the National Library of Australia (or your favourite library ) and researching the writer. At a minimum you will get a list of books published, who published the book, and some other information as well. The National Library of Australia also have some manuscript resource pages for serious research. For works of a general nature (not specific to an author) please see Australian Literature References at the bottom of this file. Also see: OzLit News OzLit Reviews , or the subject author in the which can also be accessed through the Authors List for more information.

Past Officials
Officers are assumed to be Councilors/Directors for the entire term; in cases where they are not, they are also listed as a Councilor/Director. Some fractional terms are indicated by (*) before the person's name, while others are indicated by the actual dates served. Replacements of elected Councilors/Directors are appointed by the Board and assumed to serve until the end of the term. In cases of carryover appointments, they are noted as interim Directors. Officers who are not elected Directors serve as Directors ex-officio, but persons holding office created by the Board do not, although they are listed as Officers with the designation of Board appointment. The Honorary President is a Director ex-officio and serves for life.

http://www.css.cornell.edu/courses/190/abstr/mahoney1.htm
Source: Kendall, H. W., and David Pimentel. Constraints on the expansion of the global food supply. Ambio 23:198-205. With a growing population, our ability to expand the future food supply is of vital concern. Henry W. Kendall and David Pimentel summarize their ideas on the factors affecting our ability to expand the world food supply to meet the needs of the year 2050. The world population is now increasing at a rate of 1.7% per year. Improving the nutrition for this growing population will require dietary shifts, improved distribution of food, and an increased quantity of food. Soil degradation is one of the greatest threats with 10 million ha of soil lost every year. Abstract author: David R. Mahoney, 4 October 1995.
