ILLINGWORTH, NELSON (1862-1926),
sculptor, was born at Portsmouth, England, in August 1862. He studied at the Lambeth art school and worked as a modeller at the Doulton potteries. He emigrated to Sydney in 1892, and in 1895 his head of an Australian aboriginal was bought for the national gallery at Sydney. Other busts were purchased for the same gallery in 1896 and 1900. Illingworth did some architectural sculpture for buildings in Sydney, and a large number of portrait busts of notable men of his time. He also went to New Zealand and modelled some busts of Maori chiefs for the government. He was preparing models for the Henry Lawson (q.v.) statue competition when he died suddenly on 26 June 1926. He left a widow, two sons and two daughters. He was a well-known and well-liked figure in the art world of Sydney. W. Moore

South Caroliniana Library Opens Long-awaited Laurens Exhibit
Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Ackerman view the Laurens paper.
Dr. C. James Taylor held an audience of South Caroliniana Library supporters spellbound on October 16 as he recounted the saga of the life and writings of Revolutionary War-era statesman and native South Carolinian, Henry Laurens (1724-1792). Dr. Taylor’s talk was entitled, “A Long Journey Home: The Revolutionary War Papers of Henry Laurens.” The occasion was the opening of an exhibit of Laurens’ papers which had been returned to South Carolina after an absence of 134 years. The papers were acquired last spring through the generosity of the Henry W. Kendall family from whom the library had received the revered Kendall Map Collection in 1961. Henry Laurens was a wealthy Charleston planter and merchant who represented South Carolina at the Continental Congress of which he was elected president in 1777. En route to Holland in search of support for the colonies’ separation from England, Laurens was captured by the British and was held in the Tower of London for 15 months as a traitor. One of the most fascinating items in the Kendall Collection is the diary Laurens kept while he was imprisoned.

Henry P. Kendall Collection Finds New Home at the South Caroliniana Library
W hen the University of South Carolina formally received the Henry P. Kendall Collection of maps, books, pamphlets, manuscripts, and newspapers on October 29, 1961, it marked the most extensive and important research collection received by the University Libraries to that point. The occasion was also the second time that Henry P. Kendall's map collection had been exhibited at the South Caroliniana Library. The first public display, in what was then known as College Library Hall, was held in 1930. University of Michigan cartographer Louis Karpinski, Mr. Kendall's friend and fellow collector, compiled a catalogue of the collection entitled Early Maps of Carolina and Adjoining Regions: Together with Early Prints of Charleston from the Collection of Henry P. Kendall. Mr. Kendall continued to collect Caroliniana until his death in 1959. YE KENDALL INN
128 W. Blanco, Boerne
Library File #24 HISTORY: Situated a block off main street in Boerne is the charming old Kendall Inn that has been visited through the years by stagecoach passengers and twentieth-century celebrities. Its history began April 23, 1859, when John James and Gus Theissen sold the land on which it stands to Erastus and Sarah Reed for the sum of only $200. The Reeds had come to Boerne from Georgia, and with them they brought the Southern Colonial style of architecture and built the center section of the inn.
As the town had been founded only ten years previously, there was no regular establishment for the shelter of the traveler. However, the hearts of the few home owners were large and it became the custom for any home owner with a spare room to care for the transient guest, sometimes for pay, sometimes not. Whether or not the Reeds offered their hospitality for pay is not known, but is is believed that they did. Eventually, the place was designated as the Reed House.
The Reeds later leased the property to Henry W. Chipman. On a paying basis, he accommodated horsemen and occasional stagecoach passengers. He then opened the grounds as a wagon yard for the convenience of the surrounding ranchers who penned their cattle in what is now the city park, awaiting other cattle for a big drive up the trail.

Arrow-back side chairs, c. 1830
possibly Worcester Chair Factory Click here to enlarge These chairs, a recent and prized acquisition, are highly unusual. There are only 4 other known chairs and one dressing table in this style and with virtually identical artwork, all in the collection of (or promised to) the American Folk Art Museum. The scenes loosely depict the Thomas Street canal basin and surrounds (see sketch and Frederick Stiles' painting). In consultation with Worcester County furniture experts, the Folk Art Museum has attributed their pieces to a Worcester fancy painter. All 6 chairs are characterized by distinctively Worcester County joinery. It is probable they were made in one of the county's northern towns, where chair manufacturing became a major enterprise after the Blackstone Canal opened, bought by the Worcester Chair Factory, and decorated by Smith Kendall (?-1877). Henry W. Miller (1800-1891) owned and operated a hardware store in town. Anticipating the impact of the canal, in 1827 he operated the Worcester Chair Factory - a business that bought unfinished chairs from country makers to be decorated in Worcester. Smith Kendall, his primary fancy painter, was his brother-in-law. The company stayed in business until 1831, when Henry Miller returned full-time to the hardware business. It appears the "up-county" makers found it more profitable to ship chairs to other markets via the canal. As one Worcester resident recollected from his childhood:

Particles from the Sky
In 1932, a new elementary particle appeared. Unlike the electron, proton, and neutron, which had been found in the laboratory, this particle was created with radiation from outer space. Soon after discovering radioactivity in rocks, people found another source of naturally occurring radioactivitythe sky. In 1910, the Jesuit priest Theodor Wulf took an electroscope to the top of the Eiffel Tower, 300 meters above the ground. He measured more radioactivity there than at ground level. The Austrian physicist Victor Francis Hess took his electroscope up in a balloon. Five kilometers above the ground, he measured four times as much radiocativity. That meant charged particles were coming from outer space. The American physicist Robert Andrews Millikan named these extraterrestrial particles "cosmic rays." What sort of particles were cosmic rays? To find out, physicists took pictures of their tracks in a cloud chamber.
