Alfred Kastler [Categories: French physicists, 1984 deaths, 1902 births] Alfred Kastler (May 3, 1902 - January 7, 1984) is a (The Romance language spoken in France and in countries colonized by France) French (A scientist trained in physics) physicist , born in Guebwiller, who won the (Click link for more info and facts about Nobel Prize for Physics) Nobel Prize for Physics in 1966. Kastler went to the Lycée Bartholdi in Colmar, Alsace, and entered at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1921. After his studies, in 1926 he first begun teaching physics in Lycée of Mulhouse, and then taught at the university of Bordeaux, where he became a university professor until 1941. Georges Bruhat asked him to come back at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, where he finally obtained a chair in 1952. In link with Jean Brossel, he searched on quantum mechanics, interaction beetween light and atoms, spectroscopy. Kastler, working on combination of optical resonance and magnetic resonance, used the technique of "optical pumping". Those works led to complete the theory of lasers and masers. Retour Cette double culture, allemande et française, est sans doute à l'origine de sa vocation européenne. Il publie en 1971 un livre de poèmes "Europe, ma patrie". Avant de se consacrer à la recherche scientifique, Alfred Kastler enseigne cinq années dans les lycées de Mulhouse, de Colmar et de Bordeaux. Il revient en 1931 au laboratoire de physique de l'école normale supérieure. En 1949, il publie le principe d'une méthode optique de "détection de la résonance magnétique des états excités". En 1950, il décrit la méthode de pompage dans le "journal de physique". Elu à l'académie des sciences en 1964 et reçoit le Prix Nobel de physique en 1966 pour "la découverte et le développement de méthodes optiques dans l'études des résonances hertziennes des atomes". C'est un savant dont la personnalité ne rayonne pas seulement dans un laboratoire, il ne ménage ni son temps, ni son énergie pour se consacrer aux causes qui lui tenaient à coeur et a marqué profondément ses élèves, ses collègues et son entourage.
