I was born in New York City in 1918 into a family that had a number of artistic people among its members. My father's brother and a sister's husband were probably the best known. The latter, Ivan Olinsky, taught for many years at the Art Students' League in New York City. I have been told that my paternal grandfather professionally made artistic decorations in peoples' homes. The propensity for artistic endeavors extended to my generation and beyond.
My mother was an excellent pianist and organist and it was one of her hopes that I would become a professional pianist. As a youth I was entered into "Music Week" competitions in New York City. I had some modest success, but found at an early age that I had no taste for public performance. On the other hand, I was strongly attracted to science as a lifelong career at an early age.
I had the privilege of attending schools in the New York City public school system. Their standards of education, character building and discipline were very high and I, most certainly, benefited from them. They separated out the more advanced students and permitted them to progress at their own pace. In my case, this occasionally led to some curious circumstances. In my senior year in high school (Abraham Lincoln), the girls would join the boys to practice dancing. I was 14 years old at the time and the girls were the usual 17-18 years old. The physical discrepancy between this 14 year old boy and 17-18 year old girls was considerable. Their first reaction was incredulity but after a while they got used to my presence and even danced with me. I took the chemistry and physics courses that were available, both taught by the same man. He recognized my interests and was very encouraging to me.

Karle, Jerome
Jerome Karle, 1985 (b. June 18, 1918, New York, N.Y., U.S.), American crystallographer who, along with Herbert A. Hauptman , was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1985 for their development of mathematical methods for deducing the molecular structure of chemical compounds from the patterns formed when X rays are diffracted by their crystals. Karle was a classmate of Hauptman's at City College in New York, from which they both graduated in 1937. Karle went on to earn his Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry at the University of Michigan in 1943. After working on the Manhattan Project in 1943-44, he joined the Naval Research Laboratory in 1944, becoming in 1967 its chief scientist for research on the structure of matter.

With the discovery of fission in 1939, it became clear to scientists that certain radioactive materials could be used to make a bomb of unprecented power. U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt responded by creating the Uranium Committee to investigate this possibility. Progress was slow until Aug., 1942, when the project was placed under U.S. Army control and totally reorganized. The Manhattan Engineer District (MED) was the official name of the project. The MED's commanding officer, Gen. Leslie R. Groves, was given almost unlimited powers to call upon the military, industrial, and scientific resources of the nation.

  • Dr. Jerome Karle was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 18, 1918. He was born into a family in which there were generations of artistic people, several of whom had careers in the fine and commercial arts. A career in science was a most remote profession. Nevertheless, at an early age, perhaps eight or nine, he was avidly reading popular accounts of science, for example those of Sir James Jeans, and from that time on, he expected to spend his life in scientific pursuits.
At Michigan, Dr. Karle and his wife, Isabella, were among the first graduate students of Lawrence O. Brockway, Brockway was among the first graduate students of Linus Pauling. Both Dr. Karle and his wife did their thesis work on the molecular structure of gaseous molecules.

Message for the 6th FOCAS Meeting
from
Dr. Jerome Karle
Dear Friends: July 7, 1998 I appreciate the opportunity, given by the kind invitation of Professor Yamaguchi, to address you as the FOCAS seminar for 1998 is about to start. You are meeting once again at a time when the world is a rather dangerous place, not only because nature's energies all too often may lead to environmental catastrophes, but also because of human behavior. It appears that controlling some of nature's great forces is currently well beyond our capacity. On the other hand, we may ask whether human behavior can be influenced sufficiently to effect desired changes for the better.
This question overtly and subtly is inherent in many of the topics of your seminar. It is a question that is much easier to ask than to answer. If answers are to be found, however, they may very well come from your seminars and the use of the netwrok to spread the thoughts and concepts that derive from them. In a world in which population growth is out of control, natural resources are being depleted at a great rate and violence between humans is broadly threatened or in progress, your current seminar certainly has background issues that play an important role in your deliberations.
I send greetings and best wishes for good progress in your efforts.
