Yet Nobel was exceptional, if not unique, in two respects. First, the geographical spread of his complex business pursuits, which were international in an age of active nationalism, made him care little about frontiers; second, there was irony in the fact that his fortune was made from the development of explosives for peaceful purposes, which in our own century are used for both peace and war. During his final years, Nobel developed the idea of creating a prize that would encourage scientific progress, thereby improving the human condition. In his last will and testament dated November 27, 1895, Nobel specified how the portion of his estate to be used for such prizes. In 1895 the third and last will of Alfred Nobel was signed in Paris and in 1896 he died. Nobel Prize in Russia In the Soviet times in the USSR, Noble Prize was not considered prestigious by both the government, struggling against the capitalist West, and many scientists. However there were many others who were proud to take part in the competition and receive the award. There were attempts to establish several local alternatives to the Nobel Prize, but they did not prove successful. After the fall of the iron curtain, Russian scientists gained more opportunities and freedom and now the Prize is well known among the scientific community.

Pjotr Leonidoviè Kapica Úvodní strana Fyzici Ruský fyzik Pjotr Leonidoviè Kapica se narodil 8. èervence 1894 v Kronštadtu v rodinì vojenského inženýra Leonida Petrovièe Kapici. Jeho oborem byla jaderná fyzika, fyzika silných magnetických polí, fyzika vysokých výkonù, fyzika vysokých frekvencí a fyzika plazmatu. Nejvìtší význam mají jeho práce ve fyzice nízkých teplot (kryogenika). Za objev supratekutosti helia mu byla v roce 1978 udìlena Nobelova cena za fyziku Pjotr Leonidoviè Kapica absolvoval v roce 1919 leningradský Polytechnický institut. Po studiích tady pracoval do roku 1921 na katedøe elektromechaniky. Kapica a Londýn V letech 1921 - 1934 (po smrti ženy a dvou synù v dobì porevoluèních zmatkù) pracoval Pjotr Leonidoviè Kapica v Cambridge (Londýn) v Cavendishovì laboratoøi , kde byl jeho nadøízeným Ernest Rutherford . v letech 1924 - 1932 byl Kapica øeditelem výzkumu magnetismu Cavendishovy laboratoøe. Kapica tady mj. v roce 1924 navrhl pøístroj generující pole o velikosti až 500 000 gaussù. V roce 1928 objevil lineární závislost odporu rùzných kovù v silném magnetickém poli publikovanou v roce 1929 a známou jako tzv. Kapicùv zákon.

Allen and Don Misener in He was born in the city of Kronstadt . He worked in Cambridge for over 10 years and then went on a professional visit to the Soviet Union and was not allowed to return to Cambridge. Ernest Rutherford , whom Kapitsa had worked with at Cambridge, sold the Soviets Kapitsa's laboratory equipment. The Soviets then made Kapitsa form the Institute for Physical Problems with his equipment. Kapitsa won the Nobel Prize in Physics in for his work in low-temperature physics . He shared the prize with Arno Allan Penzias and Robert Woodrow Wilson (who won for unrelated work).
