Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (1853 - 1926)
niederländischer Physiker
Heike Kamerlingh Onnes wurde am 21. September 1853 in Groningen geboren. Februar 1926 in Leiden.

Awards and Honors at SLAC Zhi-Xun Shen, associate professor of physics and applied physics at SSRL, was awarded the H. Kamerlingh Onnes Prize and a $5,000 award. Citation: " For elucidating the electron structure of oxydic, high-temperature superconductors and other strongly interacting electron materials by angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy ." As part of the ceremony, Shen will present a paper in Houston this month at the 6th International Conference on Materials and Mechanisms of Superconductivity and High-Temperature Superconductors . The Onnes Prize is awarded for outstanding experiments which illuminate the nature of superconductivity other than materials. Sponsored by Elsevier, Publisher of Physica C-Superconductivity and its Applications. Shen received his BS degree in 1983, Fudan University and his Masters in 1985 from Rutgers University. He was awarded a PhD in 1989 from Stanford University. Shen is the winner of numerous other awards: the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow, 1993; the NSF Young Investigator Award, 1993; and the Materials Sciences Research Award for Outstanding Scientific Accomplishment in Solid State Physics from the DOE, 1994. Heike Kamerlingh-Onnes was the winner of the 1913 Nobel Prize in Physics for his investigations on the properties of matter at low temperatures which led, among other things, to the production of liquid helium.

    3. The Library Survey In March, 1963, the project addressed itself to about 250 European libraries, academies, and archives selected from The World of Learning The response to our request was most gratifying, over 60 per cent of the institutions addressed answering. Of these, 29 indicated holdings of relevant material, notice of which has been included, when appropriate, in Chapter II. The names of the institutions giving positive responses make up the third item in this appendix. The institutions are listed by region and, within each region, alphabetically by city. A given collection, in so far as it has been incorporated in Chapter II, can be reconstructed from the index entries under the name of the institution in question. REGIONS

Kamerlingh Onnes By courtesy of the Museum Boerhaave, Leiden, Neth. (b. Sept. 21, 1853, Groningen, Neth.d. Feb. 21, 1926, Leiden), Dutch winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1913 for his work on low-temperature physics and his production of liquid helium. He discovered superconductivity , the almost total lack of electrical resistance in certain materials when cooled to a temperature near absolute zero. From 1871 until 1873 Kamerlingh Onnes studied and worked at Heidelberg University, notably with the German physicists Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff. Awarded a doctorate by the University of Groningen (1879), he taught at the Polytechnic School in Delft (1878-1882). From 1882 to 1923 he served as professor of experimental physics at the University of Leiden. Influenced by the work of Johannes van der Waals, Kamerlingh Onnes investigated the equations describing the states of matter and studied the general thermodynamic properties of liquids and gases over a wide range of pressures and temperatures. He founded (1894) and built up the Cryogenic Laboratory (now known by his name) that established Leiden as the low-temperature research centre of the world. From 1895 to 1906 he concentrated on perfecting cryogenic experimental techniques and studied metals and fluids at low temperatures. Having built an improved hydrogen-liquefaction machine two years previously, he succeeded in liquefying helium in 1908. His attempts to solidify helium were fruitless until Willem Hendrik Keesom, his student and successor as director of the Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratory, achieved the feat in 1926.
