Leiden, Netherlands, February 21, 1926] Kamerlingh Onnes continued the work of James Dewar in liquefying gases, achieving liquid helium (the coldest liquid gas) in 1908. Three years later he recognized that certain metals, such as mercury, tin, or lead, when cooled to the temperature of liquid helium below -268.9°C (-454°F) conduct electricity with zero resistance, the phenomenon known as superconductivity. Encyclopedia Kamerlingh Onnes, Heike hÄ« kə k¤ mərlÄ­ng ´n əs ) , 1853–1926, Dutch physicist. He was, from 1882, professor of physics at the Univ. of Leiden. He made important studies of the properties of helium and, in attempting to solidify it, produced a temperature within one degree of absolute zero. In the course of his low temperature experiments, he discovered the property of superconductivity in certain metals. For these researches he received the 1913 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Onnes was born in Groningen Netherlands . His father, Harm Kamerlingh Onnes, was the brickworks owner. His mother was Anna Gerdina Coers of Arnhem. In , Onnes attended the University of Groningen . Heike Kamerlingh Onnes was Dutch winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1913 for his work on low-temperature physics and his production of liquid helium. He discovered superconductivity, the almost total lack of electrical resistance in certain materials when cooled to a temperature near absolute zero.
Heike Kamerlingh Onnes was born on September 21, 1853, at Groningen, The Netherlands. His father, Harm Kamerlingh Onnes, was the owner of a brickworks near Groningen; his mother was Anna Gerdina Coers of Arnhem, the daughter of an architect. After spending the allotted time at the " Hoogere Burgerschool " in his native town (secondary school without classical languages), the director of which was the later Professor of Chemistry at Leyden J.M. van Bemmelen, he received supplementary teaching in Greek and Latin. In 1870 he entered the University of Groningen, obtained his " candidaats " degree (approx. B.Sc.) the following year, and then went to Heidelberg University as a student of the German physicists

Heike Kamerlingh-Onnes
nizozemský fyzik Heike Kamerlingh-Onnes se narodil v Groningenu, studoval v Leidenu a na univerzitì v Heidelbergu u tak významných fyzikù jako byli G. R. Kirchhoff a R. W. Bunsen . Pod jejich vedením získal mimoøádné experimentátorské dovednosti a zkušenosti s konstruováním technických zaøízení pro fyzikální pokusy. Krátkou chvíli pùsobil jako asistent na Technické univerzitì v Delftu. Poté odešel na místo zamìøené více vìdecky - na univerzitu do Leidenu, kde byl roku 1882 jmenován profesorem experimentální fyziky.
Fyzika pøi nízkých teplotách
V Leidenu vzniklo díky Kemerlinghovi unikátní zaøíení, kterým dosáhl teplot asi 5 K a mohl zkapalòovat vzduch, vodík a nìkteré další plyny. Práce v novì zøízené kryogenní laboratoøi pøinesla po vyøešení øady technických obtíží unikátní výsledky pøi pokusech za ještì nižších teplot a vyvrcholila 10. èervna 1908 zkapalnìním helia (podaøilo se získat asi 60 cm helia). Úporná práce se vyplatila. Pøinesla neobyèejné poznatky o heliu pøi nízkých teplotách. Kamerlingh-Onnes zjistil, že pøi teplotách blízkých absolutní nule existují dvì kapalná helia, výraznì se lišící svými fyzikálními vlastnostmi. Jedna forma - dnes oznaèovaná jako helium I - existuje až do teploty 2,19 K. V této formì je helium èirá kapalina s hustotou asi 7krát menší než je hustota vody s velmi malou viskozitou. Pod teplotou 2,19 K pøechází kapalné helium do formy II. Jeho pøekvapující vlastností je obrovská tepelná vodivost, asi 10

Portions of this entry contributed by Michel Barran Dutch physicist was graduated from the University of Groningen, receiving his Ph.D. in 1879 after having studied with Bunsen and Kirchhoff at Heidelberg (1871-1873). In his doctoral thesis, he gave both theoretical and experimental proofs that Foucault's well-known pendulum experiment should be considered as a special case of a large group of phenomena which can be used to prove the rotation of the Earth. Kamerlingh-Onnes taught at Polytechnic School at Delft (Netherlands) in 1880-1882, during which time he was in close contact with van der Waals, professor of physics in Amsterdam. Kamerlingh-Onnes became a professor of experimental physics at Leiden (1882-1924). Kamerlingh-Onnes's main research goal was to gather experimental evidence for the atomic theory of matter and to give experimental support to van der Waals's corpuscular theory of gazes at low temperatures. He established the Cryogenic Laboratory at Leyden University (1894) which, using the Joule-Thomson effect he produced liquid helium for the first time in 1908. Later, his pupils W. H. Keesom and W. J. de Haas conducted experiments in the same laboratory, which led them still closer to
