Spanish stamp: Teruel for the Republic! Dec-1937 While the Republic is running short of supply, especially ammunition, Hitler and Mussolini are strengthening Franco more and more. The fall of northern Spain to the Fascists gave Franco control over the steel industry and the coal mines, allowing him to assure payment for this help. The desperate struggle of democratic Spain is moving many people throughout the world. Polls in the USA are showing that 76% of those having an opinion about the civil war were in favor of supporting the Republic. Anthony Eden, British foreign minister, had changed his opinion from the beginning of the war (total neutrality) to help the Republic. He understood that Britain could only loose in the conflict: if Franco wins, Fascism will be definitely the main power in Europe and if the Republic wins, he feared the Communist party would take over the country. Only the support of the democratic nations could help the Spanish government to win the war and urge back the Soviet/Communist influence. Chamberlain disagreed completely with Eden. For Chamberlain, Hitler and Franco were bulwarks against world Communism, reliable partners and would never threaten Britain. France, on he other hand, is suffering from internal political problems. The Fascist groupings in France are growing in number and influence, as their counterparts on the left. With Chamberlains thread, to be left alone if they provoke an attack by Hitler and Mussolini, France is forced to a Republican-unfriendly neutrality.

CENTRAL EUROPE CAMPAIGN FINAL VICTORY The 36th then began pushing farther into the heart of Germany’s "National Redoubt" — a rumored area of cached supplies and weapons meant for a last stand in Bavaria. The Division followed the 12th Armored Division and was responsible for mopping up pockets of by-passed enemy resistance. When Americans and Russian troops made contact to the north at the Elbe River, any more transfer of troops and supplies to the south was cut off. Enemy resistance began crumbling completely. Truckloads and trainloads of German troops began coming in to surrender but a few, die-hard groups continued to fight and had to be eliminated. The 443rd noted many German fighter planes hidden among the trees along some of the German main highways (autobahns). Some of these highways had their center divider strip painted mottled green to resemble vegetation. These roads had then been used as landing strips, since Allied bombing had put most of the military and civilian airports out of business. Fuel shortages had helped ground the Luftwaffe and Allied air dominance did the rest. In the Bavarian Alps the 141st Regiment trapped 66 Germans on top of Hill 1538. They refused to surrender until the 3rd Section of 443rd Platoon C-2 fired into their positions, killing one and wounding another. The rest surrendered at once. As the 36th Division continued its drive to the south and east, picking up German stragglers heading for Alpine hideouts, it captured a number of Nazi bigwigs. One of the first of these was Field Marshall Gerd Von Runstedt, taken at Bad Tolz. Pressing deeper into Germany, Berchtesgaden was taken and the Division roared into the Inn River Valley. By the time that German Army Group G surrendered at 12:00 noon 6 May 1945, the 36th Division had bagged more Nazi leaders and had freed a number of high ranking French prisoners.

FRENCH LEADERS FREED Reynaud Gamelin Daladier Sorotra Even as the last cylinder of the German war machine burned out, the Division was tracking down big-name Nazis and rescuing prominent Allied leaders. In one forceful stroke of liberation an attached tank crew of the 12th Armored Division and four infantrymen of the 142nd Infantry released from German captivity much of the-glory-that-had-been-France in the personages of two former prime ministers, a former chief of staff, a leading general, a tennis star, and a labor leader. Itter Castle The French were rescued when a task force, commanded by Captain John Lee, climbed the mountain to Itter in a midnight ride past parked hostile German vehicles, and reached the twelfth century Alpine castle of Itter. There the German commandant offered the castle in surrender, freeing the notables. But all around the castle at the time were other German troops, retreating before the American advance. When they learned what had happened during the night and how insignificant was the American force, they attacked strongly in the morning, attempting to retake the castle and kill their former prisoners. An "88" firing from a railroad tunnel below, knocked out the lone American tank and blasted gaping holes in the old stone building. German "88" firing from below, blasted holes in the rear of the tower.

The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made. In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

Article The Norwegian Nobel Committee, in its 101 years of existence has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize not only to United Nations agencies and staff eight times-we look at the eight laureates associated with the United Nations, including the Organization itself, in following pages-it has also honoured a number of individuals and organizations working indirectly with the United Nations or its precursor, the League of Nations.
Before 1914, the Nobel Committee credited, in particular, efforts at legislation and arbitration leading to peace, especially in connection with the Hague Peace Conferences of 1899 and 1907, and it awarded the Prize to a number of representatives of popular peace movements and international legal tradition, such as Frederic Passy of France (1901), one of the principal founders of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and former Belgian Prime Minister August Beernaert (1909), a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague.
In the period between the two world wars, many of the laureates were closely associated with the League of Nations. In 1919, the Peace Prize was awarded to United States President Woodrow Wilson for his crucial role in establishing the League; the following year it went to Leon Bourgeois of France, known as its "spiritual father". Perhaps no one was more closely identified with the League of Nations than one of its architects, Lord Robert Cecil of the United Kingdom, who received the Prize in 1937, and participated in 1946 in the final meetings of the League at Geneva, ending his speech with, "The League is dead; long live the United Nations!" He remained active in supporting international efforts for peace through his honorary life presidency of the United Nations Association.
