Giaever and Esaki Brian Josephson Born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1940. Studied, and obtained his Ph.D., at Cambridge University. Professor of Physics, Cambridge University, in 1974. In 1962, first publication about the Josephson effect (superconductivity: under certain conditions, electron pairs are able to "tunnel" from one superconductor through a thin insulating layer into a different superconductor). The Josephson effect is employed, e.g., in instruments measuring the intensity of the magnetic field of currents in the brain and for highly sensitive measurements of currents and voltages. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1973 for his work together with Leo Esaki and Ivar Giaever. Brian Josephson also works on complex systems, including the brain, and on sociological issues in science. | |
