Joliot-Curie, Frederic (1900-1958):
Frederic Joliot-Curie was a famous French nuclear researcher who helped to bring France into the atomic age. With his wife Irene, he discovered the first isotope, which led to artificial radioactivity. This discovery was essential in the development of the atomic bomb . When France was invaded in World War II, Frederic and Irene went into hiding and joined the Communist party. After the war, he was appointed as the head of France's Atomic Energy Commission but was dismissed when it was discovered that he was a Communist. However, his accomplishments were still very esteemed, including the 1935 Nobel Prize in chemistry, and the 1951 Stalin Peace Prize. A B C D ... Home

In 1925, Joliot worked as an assistant to Marie Curie at the Radium Institute of Paris. Joliot met Marie Curie's daughter, Irene, while working at the institute and married her in 1926. Joliot received his Doctor of Science degree in 1930 for his research in electrochemistry and radioactive elements. Joliot and his wife collaborated in the study of atomic nucleus projection and in other fields of nuclear physics. The Joliot-Curie team made a monumental discovery in 1934 when they produced the first artificial radioactive elements. Using alpha Printer Friendly

This discovery earned the Joliot-Curie team the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for their synthesis of new radioactive elements." The Joliot-Curie contributions were extremely important to the advancement of nuclear physics and contributed to the development of the first atomic bomb. Joliot went on to research atomic pile construction using uranium and heavy water, for which he earned five patents between 1939 and 1940. His involvement in the Resistance during the Nazi occupation of France in World War II led Joliot to become President of the National Front and to establish the French Communist party. Frederic Joliot was appointed the first High Commissioner for Atomic Energy in 1946. In 1948, he directed the construction of France's first atomic pile with the help of his wife.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Jean Frederic Joliot The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1935 F. Joliot was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and of the Academy of Medicine. He was also a member of numerous foreign scientific academies and societies, and holder of an honorary doctor's degree of several universities. He was a Commander of the Legion of Honor. His recreations show him as a man of wide attainments, among which piano playing, landscape painting and reading were predominant. He was awarded the Nobel Prize jointly with his wife "in recognition of their synthesis of new radioactive elements". In 1937 he was nominated Professor at the College de France. He left the Radium Institute and had built for his new laboratory of nuclear chemistry the first cyclotron in Western Europe. After the discovery of the fission of the uranium nucleus, he produced a physical roof of the phenomenon; then he worked on chain reactions and the requirements and the requirements for the successful construction of an atomic pile using uranium and heavy water. On the death of Irene Joliot-Curie, in 1956, he became, while still remaining his professorship at the College de France, holder of the Chair of Nuclear Physics which she had held at the Sorbonne.

  • The most accessible though highly partisan account of Joliot-Curie's life and work in English is Pierre Biquard, (trans. 1965). Shorter, but scientifically informative, is the biographical essay by P. M. S. Blackett in Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society, vol. 6 (1960).
