Home / Ir¨ne Joliot-Curie Ir¨ne Joliot-Curie Born:  12 September 1897, Paris, France Died:  17 March 1956, Paris, France One half of the Joliot-Curie husband and wife partnership researching radioactivity. Ir¨ne was born Ir¨ne Curie, daughter to the celebrated Pierre and Marie. Much of her education came from her mother, whom she assisted with radiography during the First World War and later at the Paris Radium Institute. Here she met her future husband, fellow atheist Fr©d©ric Joliot. They were married in 1926. The Joliot-Curies worked together on radioactivity just as the Curies had done. In 1933-34, they observed that aluminium which had been bombarded by a-particles continued to emit positrons afterwards, from which they deduced that a new 'radioisotope' had been created. This was the discovery of artificial radioactivity, for which they shared the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Their find meant that in addition to the small group of naturally radioactive elements, other elements could be made radioactive. This proved immensely useful for medicine and industry. During the Second World War the Joliot-Curies remained in France and were active in the resistance against the Nazis. Later Ir¨ne became a commissioner for the French atomic energy project. She died, like her mother, of radiation-induced leukaemia.

Joliot-Curie, Irène y Jean Frédéric (1897-1956 y 1900-1958 respectivamente), matrimonio de físicos franceses premiados con el Nobel. Célebres por su estudio de la radiactividad artificial y por su contribución al descubrimiento del neutrón. Irène Curie nació el 12 de septiembre de 1897 en París, hija de los físicos Marie y Pierre Curie. Estudió en la Universidad de París y desde 1918 ayudó a su madre en el Instituto del Radio de esta universidad. Frédéric Joliot nació en París el 19 de marzo de 1900 y estudió en la Escuela de Física y Química Industrial de París y en la universidad de esa misma ciudad. Durante su trabajo como ayudante en el Instituto del Radio conoció a Irène Curie con la que se casó en 1926, trabajando en equipo posteriormente. Los Joliot-Curie se especializaron en el campo de la física nuclear. En 1933 descubrieron que los elementos radiactivos pueden prepararse artificialmente a partir de elementos estables. En estos experimentos bombardearon el boro con partículas alfa, obteniendo una forma radiactiva de nitrógeno. En 1935 recibieron el Premio Nobel de Química por su contribución a la investigación nuclear. En 1936 Irène Joliot-Curie trabajó para el gobierno francés como subsecretaria de Estado para la Investigación Científica. Fue miembro de la Comisión de Energía Atómica francesa desde 1946 a 1951 y directora del Instituto del Radio desde 1947. Oficial de la Legión de Honor en 1939, recibió otros muchos honores por su contribución a la física nuclear. Murió de leucemia, el 17 de marzo de 1956 en París, enfermedad que contrajo a causa de su trabajo.
