From the obituary by James Chadwick in Nature, 177, 964 (1956):
beautiful discovery of artificial radioactivity . An interesting feature of this discovery is that it was so long in coming; for the phenomenon of artificial activity had been expected, and sought for, since the earliest days of radioactivity. For this discovery the Joliot-Curies were awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1935. "About two years later ... with P. Savic, she examined in detail the artificial radioelements produced by the irradiation of uranium by slow neutrons, analysing the products and identifying them chemically, and she came within a hair's-breadth of recognizing that the phenomenon involved in the production of these elements was that of fission
Discovered , but did not fully identify, the radioactive isotope of lanthanum with half-life of 3.5 hours which is a fission product of neutron bombardment of uranium (with P. Savitch).

IRENE JOLIET-CURIE
After reading the accomplishments of this brilliant, dedicated scientist we wondered why we had heard so little of her before. She was overshadowed by those around her. She was overshadowed by Nobel laureate parents Marie and Pierre Curie, by co-laureate and husband Frederick J.-C., by physicist daughter Helene ,who married to Paul Langevin's grandson, and by biochemist son Pierre Joliet. In some ways she was even overshadowed by non-scientist sister Eve Denise Curie, who wrote the 1937 biography of her mother that inspired so many of us. This overshadowing, which has threatened to mask the significance of Irene's work, is illuminated poignantly, and perhaps unintentionally, by Francis Carter Wood, writing in Science Monthly in 1938: "Marie Curie by her chemical discovery of the element radium inaugurated what may be called modern physics, and it must have been to her a marvelous satisfaction that her daughter, Irene Joliet-Curie, has followed in her footsteps, making one discovery after another, which would render the name Curie imperishable had her mother never been famous." (1) He goes on to say, "It remains to Marie the singular distinction among women of having made the most revolutionary discovery in atomic physics."

Irène Joliot-Curie (1897-1956) French physicist, was born in Paris, in September 12th 1897, daughter of Pierre and Marie Curie . Died in Paris at March 17th 1956. Studied at the Sorbonne and was a nurse in the 1914-18 World War. Her first scientific paper appeared in 1921. Irène worked at the Radium Institute of the University of Paris, where she met Jean Frédéric Joliot , her future husband in 1926. Together they won the Nobel Prize of Chemistry in 1935 for their works in the artificial induction of radioactivity. In 1936, Irène worked as a research secretary in Léon Blum's government. However, she decided to concentrate in her scientific work, that continued even during the German occupation of France in World War II. In 1944, ran away to Switzerland due to the communist ideas of her husband. Irène was also expelled from the French Atomic Energy Commission, in 1951.
