Irène Joliot-Curie (1897–1956) had the unusual experience of attending for two years in her childhood a special school that emphasized science, organized by her mother, Marie Curie , and her scientific friends for their own children. She was still a teenager when she worked with her mother in the radiography corps during World War I. After the war she assisted her mother at the Radium Institute in Paris, meanwhile completing her doctorate. She married Frédéric Joliot (1900-1958), a young physicist who had come to work with her mother. The Joliot-Curies won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1935 for their discovery of artificial radiation by bombardment of alpha particles (helium nuclei, He ) on various light elements. They correctly interpreted the continued positron emission that occurred after bombardment had ceased as evidence that "radioactive isotopes" of known elements had been created. These isotopes rapidly became important tools in biomedical research and in the treatment of cancer. The Joliot-Curies were the parents of a boy and a girl, both of whom became scientists—thus continuing a famous scientific dynasty.

I rene J oliot- C urie I rene Curie, daughter of Pierre and Marie Curie, was born on September 12, 1897 in Paris. As a child she was educated at home by her mother, but Irene would go on to finish her education at the University of Paris and the Faculty of Science. After 1918 she began helping her mother at the School of Radium of the University of Paris, and during World War I she served as a nurse radiographer. A young man named Frederic Joliot also became an assistant at the Institute of Radium, and there he met Irene. The two were married in 1926, and both took the name of Joliot-Curie. After their marriage the Joliot-Curies formed a great scientific team. Both specialized in nuclear physics, which enabled them to make their discovery that radioactive elements can be artificially formed from stable elements. The Joliot-Curies were awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their contribution to the field of nuclear research. Irene would not stop there, however, and went on to achieve many other honors. I W eb sites used to create this article: www.netsrq.com/~dbois/joliot.html

Director of the Radium Institute
As the oldest daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie, it is no surprise that Irene would exhibit an early interest in science. Unlike other young girls of this time, Irene's interest was considered by her parents to be completely normal. It was expected that she should pursue an advanced degree in science. Accordingly, Irene attended the University of Paris, where she graduated with a doctorate in physics. After graduation, Irene began work with her mother at the Radium Institute. There she met her future husband, Frederic Joliot and they married in 1926, adopting the combined name of Joliot-Curie. They would work together as a team until the German occupation of France during World War II. In 1933, they made the discovery that radioactive elements can be artificially produced from stable elements. This was done by exposing aluminum foil to alpha particles. When the radioactive source was removed, the Joliot-Curies discovered that the aluminum had become radioactive.

Irene was the daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie. She carried on her parents' research into radioactivity, first helping to establish the use of x-rays to diagnose injuries on the battlefield in World War I. Irene began working at her mother's Radium Institute in 1921. She married Frederic Joliot, a pupil of her mother's, in 1926. They both took the name Joliot-Curie. Together, the two physicists discovered artificial radioactivity. Their experiments found that certain elements became radioactive themselves after being exposed to radioactivity. Irene and Frederic were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1935. Irene became a professor at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1937 and in 1946 was made director of the Radium Institute. They were the son-in-law and daughter of Nobel Prize winners Pierre and Marie Curie
Irene Curie from 1912 to 1914 prepared for her baccalaureat at the College Sevigne and in 1918 became her mother's assistant at the Institut du Radium of the University of Paris. In 1925 she presented her doctoral thesis on the alpha rays of polonium. In the same year she met Frederic Joliot in her mother's laboratory; she was to find in him a mate who shared her interest in science, sports, humanism, and the arts.
As a boarding student at the Lycee Lakanal, Frederic Joliot had distinguished himself more in sports than in studies. Reversals of family fortune had then forced him to choose a free public education at the Lavoisier municipal school in order to prepare for the entrance competition at the ecole de Physique et de Chimie Industrielle, from which he graduated with a degree in engineering, ranking first. After completing his military service, he accepted a research scholarship and, on the recommendation of the physicist Paul Langevin, was hired in October 1925 as Marie Curie's assistant. The following year (on Oct. 9, 1926) Frederic and Irene were married.

Irene Curie's accomplishments and contributions to the advancement of nuclear physics were enormous. In 1934, the Joliot-Curie team generated the first artificial radioactivity from stable elements. By using alpha particles to bombard aluminum foil and boron in separate experiments, they produced a radioactive phosphorous from the aluminum and a radioactive form of nitrogen from the boron. For this work the husband and wife team were jointly awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "in recognition of their synthesis of new radioactive elements." In 1936, Curie was appointed Undersecretary of State for Scientific Research. She became the Director of the Radium Institute in 1946. From 1946 to 1951, Curie served as a member of the French Atomic Energy Commission with her husband and assisted in establishing France's first atomic pile. She was excused of her services in 1951 because of her association with the French Communist party, which her husband founded.
