Johnson, Eyvind Born in 1900 at Svartbjorsbyn near Boden in the north of Sweden. Parents, Olof Petter J., stonecutter from Varmland, and Cevia Gustafsdotter from Blekinge. There were six children in the family, of whom E.J. was the next youngest. His father fell ill with silicosis about 1904, and E.J. was taken care of by his childless aunt and her husband, stonecutter Anders Johan Rost. At the age of fourteen he left his foster-parents, of whom he was very fond, to look for work near the home where he was born.
From the autumn of 1920 to the autumn of 1921, together with two or three friends, he worked at haymaking and timber-felling on a small farm in Uppland, where he had spare time and peace in which to read and write. In the autumn of 1921 he went to Germany - by cargo boat to Kiel, by train to Berlin, and a few months later he continued via the Rhineland to Paris, where he earned his living writing for Swedish papers, as a cement worker, and then as a dishwasher at a big hotel near the Gare du Nord. Then back to Berlin, where he remained until the autumn of 1923, when he returned home to Sweden. His first book, De fyra framlingarna (The Four Strangers), a collection of short stories, was finished in the spring of 1924 and published during the autumn. During a winter visit to the North, he finished his second book, which was published in the autumn of 1925. By then E.J. was back in France, where he was to live for over five years.

Early Life
His father died when Johnson was 3, and at 14 he was apprenticed to a tailor. In 1826 the family moved to E Tennessee, and Andrew soon had his own tailor shop at Greeneville. A man of no formal schooling but of great perseverance and strength of character, he was greatly aided by his wife, Eliza McCardle, whom he married in 1827; she taught him to write and improved his reading and spelling. He prospered at his trade, and the tailor shop became the favored meeting place of other artisans, laborers, and small farmers interested in discussing public affairs. The best debater in the community, Johnson became the leader of his group in opposition to the slaveholding aristocracy.

Nobel Short Stories Here are seven short stories by three Swedish Nobel Laureates. My experience suggests that you will not appreciate every short story, but you will also find at least one jewel, and maybe more. This of course depends on your personal preferences. Barrabas It is not too surprising that in three stories Harry Martinson speaks largely of journeys by ship; he later became know for a much longer journey in a ship never seen before on a sea much wider than the Atlantic. With respect to the translation, let me only say that I myself could not tell the difference between it and a well-done original.
You can find other translations from Lagerkvist here here Aniara , which was translated into Esperanto by Bertil Nilsson and William Auld and which appeared as an extraordinary publication in the East-West series.
