About the ICRC ICRC activities The ICRC worldwide Focus ... Iraq Section The ICRC in Iraq Persistent and widespread violence continues throughout Iraq, forcing the ICRC to adopt an exceptional modus operandi there. Operationally, priority has now been assigned to protection activities with a particular focus on those detained or interned by the multinational forces in Iraq and by the Iraqi authorities.
Emergency assistance is provided to existing health-care facilities and the ICRC's longstanding working relationship with the Iraqi water and sanitation authorities has helped prevent the outbreak of epidemics and relieve hardship among the civilian population. Reinforcing cooperation with the Iraqi Red Crescent Society (IRCS) and strengthening its capacities are other priorities.
The ICRC has been present in Iraq since the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq conflict in 1980.

Democratic Republic of the Congo International humanitarian law asserts that children's rights must be respected during armed conflict but children are often torn from their families, pressed into serving as soldiers, held in captivity or simply killed. The ICRC tries to ensure children in war have adequate access to medical care, food and water, and, when possible, reunites them with their families. It also campaigns against the recruitment of child soldiers and reminds all parties to conflict of their obligations towards children.

Since the Red Cross has figured four times in the award of the Nobel Peace Prize ( , and 1963), as well as in the award to Henri Dunant (1901), and has therefore been made the subject of various presentation speeches and Nobel lectures which give details of its inception, history, and activities, the following brief summary of its origins and present organization is intended as a frame of reference for all four of these awards rather than as the typical history ordinarily included for each award to an organization. Origins
In February of 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland, the [Geneva Public Welfare Society] set up a committee of five Swiss citizens to look into the ideas offered by Henri Dunant in his book Un Souvenir de Solferino - ideas dealing with protection of the sick and wounded during combat. The committee had as its members: Guillaume Henri Dufour (1787-1875), a general of the Swiss army and a writer of military tracts who became the committee's president for its first year and its honorary president thereafter; Gustave Moynier (1826-1910), a young lawyer and president of the sponsoring Public Welfare Society, who from this time on devoted his life to Red Cross work; Louis Appia (1818-1898) and Theodore Maunoir (1806-1869), both medical doctors; and Henri Dunant himself.
Guided by Moynier's talent for organization, the committee called an international conference for October of 1863 which, with sixteen nations represented, adopted various pertinent resolutions and principles, along with an international emblem, and appealed to all nations to form voluntary units to help wartime sick and wounded. These units eventually became the National Red Cross Societies, and the Committee of Five itself eventually became the International Committee of the Red Cross, with Gustave ldoynier as its president (1864-1910) both before and after it took this name.

(Humanitarian law) The relevance of IHL in the context of terrorism
Events in recent years have increased interest in the issue of how international humanitarian law is applied in today's context of violent confrontation. In a new paper, the ICRC provides answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about international humanitarian law and terrorism. (Humanitarian law) ICRC activities in the field of weapons
The question of arms and their use has been a concern of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) since its establishment in 1863. The founder of the ICRC, Henry Dunant, warned already in 1862 that new technologies threatened to make war more barbaric. (Humanitarian law) Study on Customary International Humanitarian Law
The ICRC conducted the study at the specific request of States who sought the ICRC's assistance in trying to identify the unwritten rules of customary humanitarian law.

SR. DEFENSE OFFICIAL:  Hello.  As you know, officials of the Department of Defense today briefed members of the Armed Services Committees of the Congress on the interactions between the Department of Defense and the International Committee of the Red Cross the ICRC.  This is in response to the secretary's desire to provide information to Congress that is relevant to the Congress's oversight responsibilities, and in response to a number of queries from congressional committees. My purpose in this brief is to give you background information about the role of the ICRC, how DOD interacts with ICRC, and to describe the confidential aspect of the communications between ICRC and detaining powers, which is quite significant and quite important.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The International Committee of the Red Cross ICRC ) is a committee of Swiss nationals and probably will be so as long as the ICRC exists. Since a couple of years ago service of individuals from other countries as delegates to lead or participate in abroad missions conducted by the ICRC has been allowed. Previously, serving as a delegate was also restricted to Swiss citizens but the need for delegates by far exceeds the number of Swiss people who are willing and/or qualified to go on such a mission. The committee appoints new members to itself to replace those who resign or die, and the maximum number of members is 25. They lead the international Red Cross movement (often simply known after its symbol, the Red Cross ), and has special responsibilities under international humanitarian law. Its key responsibility is to maintain support and respect for international humanitarian law , which serves to protect the victims of armed conflict . Its formation was first mandated by the First Geneva Convention The ICRC must be distinguished from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRCS). The ICRC leads the international Red Cross movement, whereas the IFRCS is the composed body of all national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies.
