Photo by Bill Hoban/Index-Tribune 07.01.05 - When Sonoma business owner and fair-trade activist Candi Smucker received notice a few weeks ago confirming that she was one of 1,000 women worldwide whose names had been submitted to the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize committee, she thought to herself, "That's nice," and set the letter aside.
The reality didn't start to hit, Smucker said, until she began getting e-mails from the U.S. coordinator for the 1,000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize project, firming up details for announcing the nominees' names on Wednesday, June 29. "I thought, 'Oh dear, they're serious,'" Smucker recalled with a laugh. "The first time I had to tell someone out loud that I was a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, I got the giggles. How could this be happening to me? This is so big and so important, it's overwhelming."
The 1,000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize project was created in 2003 by Ruth-Gaby Vermot-Mangold, a member of the Swiss National Council in Bern and of the European Council in Strasbourg.

Abel Prize Awarded: The Mathematicians' Nobel
The Abel Prize, established by the Norwegian government in 2001 as an annual "Nobel Prize for Mathematics" and first awarded last year, will go this year to Professor Isadore Singer, 80, of MIT and Sir Michael Atiyah, 75, who has held an honorary position at the University of Edinburgh since he retired from Cambridge University a few years ago. The prize is being given for the work that led to the names Atiyah and Singer being forever linked in the field of mathematics: the "Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem", which they formulated and proved in a series of papers they published in the early 1960s. The Index Theorem provides a bridge between pure mathematics (differential geometry, topology, and analysis) and theoretical physics (quantum field theory) that has led to advances in both fields. The Norwegian Academy of Science, which oversees and manages the new prize, referred to the Index Theorem as "one of the great landmarks of 20th century mathematics". In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that the result changed the landscape of mathematics. Atiyah, who trained as an algebraic geometer and topologist, and Singer, who came from analysis, worked on ramifications of the theorem for twenty years. Sir Michael, quoted in an article in Britain's

    Americans win Nobel in economics
    Story Tools
STOCKHOLM, Sweden Two Americans have won the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. Daniel Kahneman and Vernon L. Smith received the honour on Wednesday for their work using psychological research and laboratory experiments in economic analysis. Kahneman, 68, a U.S. and Israeli citizen based at Princeton University in New Jersey, and Smith, 75, of George Mason University, will share the roughly $1 million prize. The economics prize is the only one of the Nobel awards not established in the will of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. Kahneman has integrated insights from psychology into economics, especially concerning human judgment and decision-making under uncertainty, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in its citation. Smith laid the foundation for the field of experimental economics, demonstrating the importance of alternative institutions. The academy singled out Smith's use of "wind-tunnel tests," where trials of new, alternative market designs are carried out in the laboratory before being implemented.

The Nobel Prizes are awarded annually to people who have done outstanding research, invented groundbreaking techniques or equipment or made outstanding contributions to society. They were instituted by the final will of Alfred Nobel , a Swedish industrialist, and the inventor of dynamite The first ceremony to award the Nobel Prizes in literature, physics, chemistry, and medicine was held at the Old Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm in ; beginning in , the prizes have been formally awarded by the King of Sweden . King Oscar II did not initially approve of awarding grand national prizes to foreigners, but is said to have changed his mind after realizing the publicity value of the prizes for the country. A large monetary award is included with the Nobel Prizes, currently about 10 million Swedish Kronor (slightly more than one million Euros ). This was originally intended to allow the persons to continue working or researching without the pressures of raising money. (In actual fact, most prize winners have been too old to be able to do that when getting the prize, and many receivers of the Nobel Prize of Literature have been silenced by it, even if younger.) Nobel Prizes have been given anually since 1901 for achievements in:

The Nobel Prize in Literature Alfred Nobel A lfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1833. In 1842, the Nobel family moved to Russia, where Alfred and his brothers received an education in the humanities and the natural sciences from private tutors. Nobel is accredited with the invention of dynamite in 1966. Dynamite and the blasting cap are two of Nobelís most well known inventions, and he held 355 patents. Second to his reputation as an inventor is Nobelís reputation as a businessman; he established businesses and laboratories in over twenty countries. Nobel was not only interested in the sciences, he seriously considered becoming a writer, choosing instead to write poetry, drama, and even an unfinished novel in his leisure time. Nobel sought conciseness in language, and his literary gift seemed to be the aphorism. On November 27, 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his final will and testament. In his will, Nobel established the Nobel Foundation, which awards prizes in Physics, Peace, Literature, Chemistry, and Physiology or Medicine. Nobel was explicit in his instructions that the prize should go to the person or persons who made the greatest contribution to mankind through their field, regardless of nationality. Nobel died of a heart attack in San Remo, Italy on December 10, 1896, just over a year after signing his will. The first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901. In 1968, the Bank of Sweden created the "Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel", sometimes referred to as the Nobel Prize in Economics. (The Nobel e-Museum)

Nobel physics trio made 'atoms sing'
The U.S. has issued a special stamp to honour the 100-year anniversary STOCKHOLM, Sweden Two Americans and a German have won the Nobel physics prize for discovering a new state of matter that could lead to super-small machines. Americans Eric A. Cornell and Carl E. Wieman and German-born Wolfgang Ketterle won the prize for freezing matter into a new state that may help make microscopic computers and revolutionise aircraft guidance. The trio of scientists will split about $950,000 for their efforts. "This year's Nobel laureates have succeeded they have caused atoms to 'sing in unison' thus discovering a new state of matter," the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a statement. Cornell, 39, is a senior scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado.
