Welcome to Step 2, where the evolution of modern finance is discussed. Peter L. Bernstein provides the inspiration for this step in his two books, Capital Ideas, The Improbable Origins of Modern Wall Street and Against the Gods, The Remarkable Story of Risk. Both are recommended as supplemental sources to this 12-Step Program.

2.2.1 How is the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences Awarded? The Nobel Prize is perhaps the most globally recognized honor in each of the fields in which it is presented. To find out what a challenge it is to obtain, you can go to the official web site , or keep reading! The Nobel Internet archive is also a great resource. Each year the category committees send individual proposals to thousands of scientists, members of academies, and university professors in numerous countries, asking them to nominate Nobel Prize candidates for the coming year. Those considered competent by these committees to submit nominations are chosen in such a way that as many countries and universities as possible will be represented. Nominations received by each committee are then evaluated with the help of specially appointed experts. When the committees have made their selection among the nominated candidates and have presented their recommendations to the prize awarding institutions, a vote is taken for the final choice of Laureates. The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel is awarded at the Prize Awarding Ceremony at the Concert Hall in Stockholm, Sweden, on every December 10th, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.

Cancer team wins Nobel prize
Winners: Nurse (left) and Hunt celebrate in their lab STOCKHOLM, Sweden An American researcher and two British scientists have won the Nobel Prize for medicine. U.S. researcher Leland H. Hartwell and British scientists R. Timothy Hunt and Paul M. Nurse have been awarded the prize for key discoveries in the nature of cancer cell development. The 50 professors of Stockholm's Karolinska Institute, which makes up the Nobel Assembly that votes for the winner of the physiology or medicine, announced the $1 million prize on Monday. The assembly said the research "may in the long term...open new principles for cancer therapy," The Associated Press reported. The human body is made up of billions of cells that divide as the body grows. Cancer develops when some cells start to divide in an abnormal way. The award-winning team made crucial breakthroughs in understanding how cells control their division.

2004 Nobel Colloquium Play Now Email to a Friend SPEAKER: Frank Wilczek Herman Feshbach Professor of Physics, MIT ABOUT THE LECTURE: There’s no magic formula for winning the Nobel Prize. But you can’t find a more classic model than the career of Frank Wilczek, Feshbach Professor of Physics and 2004 Nobel laureate. Wilczek was a 21 year-old graduate student at Princeton when he made his breakthrough discovery. High energy physics was baffled by the “strong force,” which binds the quarks that make up protons and neutrons. Wilczek (with two colleagues who share the prize) was brave enough to entertain a really startling idea: the strong force works in just the opposite way from the more familiar forces in nature – the closer together the particles are, the weaker the force becomes, an idea Wilczek captured in the phrase "asymptotic freedom.” This profound insight into the fundamental forces of nature has astonishing explanatory power, not only for physics but also for cosmology. We now understand the early universe – the first few minutes of existence – better than we understand the universe around us today. Far from resting on his Nobel laurels, Wilczek is still working at the most puzzling frontiers of his science – for example, struggling to explain

Countries Ranked by Population to "Intellectual" Nobel Prize Ratio This investigates whether there was a correlation between number of intellectual Nobel Prizes won by a country and the average IQ score of that country . For a proper comparison, the population of each country was divided by the number of Nobel Prizes it had gotten. The only Nobel Prizes excluded from the count were the Peace Prizes. Astrophysicists win Nobel prize
Raymond Davis, 87, has received the 2002 Nobel physics prize Story Tools
STOCKHOLM, Sweden The Nobel Prize in physics has been won by scientists from the United States and Japan, it has been announced. The 2002 honour, announced on Tuesday, goes to Raymond Davis, 87, and Riccardo Giacconi, 71, of the United States and Masatoshi Koshiba, 76, of Japan. They share the $1 million prize for pioneering work on astrophysics leading to the discovery of cosmic X-ray sources, the academy said in its citation. It praised their "pioneering contributions to astrophysics," including the detection of cosmic neutrinos and the discovery of cosmic X-ray sources. The laureates used the "very smallest components of the universe to increase our understanding of the very largest," including the Sun, stars, galaxies and supernovae, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said. Mats Jonsson, chairman of the Nobel committee of physics said the winners' work had "opened new windows to space."
