Winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine WATCH IT NOW "Beloved by his medical students, who gave him a record 10 Golden Apple Awards as an exemplary teacher of the basic sciences, Ignarro is the first Nobel Laureate from the UCLA School of Medicine and the fifth from UCLA's roster of world-renowned scientists. When Ignarro first began studying nitric oxide in 1978, few envisioned its significance. Today, hundreds of scientists are in hot pursuit of nitric oxide's other secrets. Ignarro's research has already paved the way for the development of Viagra and may one day lead to the conquest of hypertension, stroke and arteriosclerosis." 1st appeared 13 October 1998 UCLA Professor Wins Nobel Prize The announcement yesterday (Oct. 12) that Louis J. Ignarro, a professor in the department of molecular and medical pharmacology at the UCLA School of Medicine, was one of three recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine brings to 33 the number of UC faculty who have won Nobel prizes. No other public university system worldwide has won more Nobel Prizes than the University of California. "The work of Professor Ignarro and his colleagues has opened fields of inquiry that have important implications for improving health and saving lives around the world," said Richard C. Atkinson, UC President. "A distinguished teacher, Professor Ignarro has now won the highest honor a researcher can receive. I am pleased to congratulate him on behalf of the university and to say how proud we are to share in the reflected glow of his accomplishment." Ignarro's award is the ninth physiology or medicine Nobel won by a UC faculty member. Last year, UCSF's Stanley Prusiner won the Nobel Prize for his work on prions.

The Dubious Promotion of Herbalife's Niteworks
Stephen Barrett, M.D.
Louis J. Ignarro, PhD. , professor of molecular and medical pharmacology at the UCLA School of Medicine, who shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his research concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system [1,2]. This article tells why I believe that Niteworks is being promoted with improper claims and Ignarro's conduct has been highly questionable.
Ingredients and Claims
Niteworks, which has been marketed since 2003, is a powdered mixture, each dose of which contains 500 mg of vitamin C, 400 international units of vitamin E, 400 micrograms of folic acid, 50 mg of lemon balm extract, 10 mg of alpha lipoic acid, and 5.2 grams of a proprietary blend of l -arginine and l -citrulline [3]. The cost is $89.95 for a 30-day supply. The label, shown below, carries Navarro's signature and states that the product is a dietary supplement. Herbalife's Web site says that Niteworks "supports energy, vascular and circulatory health"; "promotes a healthy cardiovascular system; "enhances blood flow to support function of the heart, brain and other organs"; and helps you wake up feeling rejuvenated." [4] An Herbalife fact sheet states:

Moderate exercise, supplements may prevent atherosclerosis advertisement
May 27 (HeartCenterOnline) - A combination of moderate exercise and two common dietary supplements may significantly reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis, according to results of a new UCLA study. Led by Louis J. Ignarro, recipient of the 1998 Nobel Laureate in medicine, a team of UCLA researchers found that moderate activity and dietary supplements boosted the production of nitric oxide in mice that were genetically predisposed to developing heart disease. Nitric oxide is a compound that helps the inner lining of blood vessels to dilate, which lowers blood pressure and helps the arteries deliver oxygen more effectively. Nitric oxide also boosts the oxygen-carrying capacity of red blood cells. Moderate exercise has been shown to increase nitric oxide levels within the body. Researchers found that the effect of nitric oxide was magnified when supplements were added the amino acid L-arginine and the

His research led him to the discovery that the human body uses the gas nitric oxide (a poisonous gas that if released into the air can cause lung and skin problems) to relax blood vessels in muscles to let more blood flow. This discovery later led to the creation of the drug Viagra. For his work he received a portion of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998.
